We’ve Lost Chloe

I hate to say it but Chloe is a designer we may need to cross off our list completely. Still riding on Phoebe Philo’s designs, Chloe has been pushing the Paddington and Edith (in every possible variation and configuration imaginable) to keep the name afloat (their Spring 2007 collection certainly isn’t going to do it). Their new bags as you can see here not only lack inspiration but is baffling as anything resembling good taste. We hope Paulo Melim Andersson (previously of Marni) will save the house when he debuts his Fall 2007 collection because this interim design team obviously lacks clear vision and direction and is working out as well as Britney Spear’s new stylist.

I don’t understand why every designer eventually does a patchwork bag ($2125). Is the mid-west market really that strong? The Aubrey ($2760) disco nightmare looks like something you get at Target (which I guess isn’t a total slam since all the cool designers are designing for them…. and the Gap). Again, not sure who they are targeting here with this denim ($830) atrocity, I can’t imagine the doolie and Winnebago crowd shops and Bergdorf’s much. The Dora ($1575) is not as offensive as the rest, but come on, this is a poor excuse for a new design. Did I mention a lack of inspiration? All available at Bergdorf Goodman.

  1. That braclet bag is sorta cute (minus the buttons hanging off of it), but that design is about 3-4 years old. I have one and I haven’t worn it in years!

  2. My Darling Bag Snobs,

Please forgive me, but, I couldn’t resist.

Sing along to the tune of “Twinkle, twinkle Little Star”…

    Chloe,Chloe Is this a Joke?

These handbags just make me Choke.

Without the help of Fab Phoebe,

You are dwelling in design ennui.

    Chloe,Chloe What a shame,

Maybe Paulo will save your name.

    XOXO,Hello Kelly

  3. I agree with you, I hate all of them. What are they thinking?? In saying that I do really like Chloe’s new label See by Chloe. Great Blog, I am a handbag junkie so I look forward to visiting your site often!! I just purchased an Anna Corinna bag which I love.

    Anna

  4. Dear Bag Snob,

I have written you several times and this is just how i have been feeling since Pheobes departure. I was in Neiman Marcus the other day and was in hopes that the wonderful girls in the designer handbag section had put a shipment of i’m not sure what they were hadbags in the Chloe section. I was saddened to hear them say no these are the new arrivals. I then wondered around like a lost puppy.

Please guide us lost Chloe girls to some wonderful place so we can buy something spectacular again.

    a fellow bag snob

p.s. I had simular feelings about Edith, although she is still loved.

  5. Ouch my poor eyes!

I hope Andersson can pull something better out of the [Chloe] bag. No pun intended of course ;op

  6. Bag Snobs; sometimes your criticisms aren’t any more original than the bags themselves. Is it really necessary to keep dissing Target and fly-over country? Sorry but I’m grumpy today. I love your website when you make me laugh, something my gay friends can always do when calling bad fashion what it is (or in this case bags that are just plain boring}.

  7. I completely agree with you, Bag Snob… and I hate to say it, but I always suspected this might be just around the corner. Sad, but true. I think we all knew it deep down, though none of us would ever admit it. Kind of like dating the bad boy you know will never settle down, but you keep dating him because the sex is hot and you look so perfect together. Sigh.

  8. Our apologies to Target lovers from the mid-west. We actually love Target and can’t wait to see Proenza Schouler’s new line there.

  9. Just wondering… why is it that so many of you now want to sell your Paddingtons? I agree that the new bags coming out of Chloe are ultra-icky, but how does that take away from the elegance and beauty of the Paddy? It was a fantastic design when it debuted — isn’t it still?

  10. I agree with you, beth. I don’t see why Chloe’s new designs being disappointing (or predictably poor, more like!), would make people want to dump Phoebe’s amazing designs.

It has the opposite effect on me – I cling to them even tighter!

Irena, you should carry your Bracelet Bag if you like them. Stylish women in the UK (me included) love carrying the older Chloe bags. Who cares when they first came out, when they still look so good?!

As for me, I can’t wait for Phoebe’s solo collection!!!

  11. I use to love me some Chloe – back in phoebe’s days. Forget about the main line though -have you gals seen what they’re churning out with the new see by Chloe line?? UGH – thinkin about it makes me want to spew chunks right in my paddy. They’ve got this big ‘ole “SEE BY CHLOE” gold stamp on the outside & on the strap that looks WAY off – somethin about it is just not right. I mean – Can we say…Helloooooo Canal Street! It screams ‘replica’ to me – big time. It’s way too blatant and the heavy block font? Uh- not so much buddy. Sorry, I’m just not feelin it. The only saving grace I see is that some of the bags have a crazy cool rainbow colored 70s font logo. Now, turn that puppy into a canvas tote and you’ve got a winner reachin for my wallet!
