Nuti Ostrich Tote 2007

I absolutely love Nuti, their styles, skins and quality is exactly what Bag Snob looks for in a must have, but this bag suddenly brought that to a screeching halt! At first glance, this tote jumped out and filled me with desire, the shape is adorable and the grey is divine and of course, ostrich is my favorite. But on closer inspection, I noticed that the skin is from the part of the bird that is missing the bumps, so the entire side of the bag is inconsistent with the smooth parts. Also, the handles seem disproportionately small for the size and shape. It has a 5 1/2″ drop on the handles, uh… that doesn’t even make it past my underarm. It will fit under Tina’s arm but she’s the size of a 10 year old. And this is a 18 1/2″ bag!! What sense does that make for a tote? And then I see that the flap is not functional, it looks like that’s how you would get in the bag but it is just a style feature, and not even a good one. The bag still has the beautiful ruthium hardware and lush orange suede lining that I love but if that’s all it has going for it, then who cares? I’m not sworn off Nuti, they still have amazing pieces for Spring that I cannot wait to review but I thought this was the one line that could do no wrong but I guess there is no designer that strikes gold every time. And at $4100 it is the highest priced Nuti bag. Available at Saks if you can get over all the flaws, I mean, like I said, the shape and color are great.

  1. Hi! Actually I kind of like this bag. But you really have to be small- sized to get the best of it. This said, the bag is definitely for me.

  2. bag snob kelly. you are so right! this bag is ridiculous. when i saw it in saks i just couldn’t believe the inconsistencies in the bumps. what’s the point in getting ostrich skin if the whole side of the bag looks like wrinkled leather? and i just don’t understand why a bag big enough for me to carry (i’m 6’4″) would have such small handles. my best friend is 4’11” and when she tried this bag on, i was concerned for her safety. it really looked like it could break her arm! earth to nuti – either make the bag smaller or increase the size of the handles. side note: what’s with ordinary ostrich bags being $4-5,000? you could get a fabulous croc, if you’re willing to spend that kind of money.

  3. This bag is a little too blah for me. There are much more exciting, interesting, quality exotics out there. Plus the handles make absolutely no sense and look odd on such a big bag.

  4. Dear Jane, you obviously are not familiar with ostrich skin. The lack of the “dots” or markings does not means poor quility, it only means they used the whole skin of the bird. Only about 50% of an ostrich skin has these markings, which are left on the skin by the largest feathers and quills of the bird, alwaysina round pattern on wht corresponds to the back. The rest of the ostrich skin is this smooth-wrinkly but very soft almost buttery leather wiht out the markings. When constructing something out of ostrich it is challenging not to waste so much of the product just because it does not has the markings. I usually use it for handles, seams or the bottom part of the piece. Just wanted to clarify that no dots does not means poor quility, It is the nature of the ostrich skin.

  5. Please, I would tote any bag of this quality. Maybe I am not familiar with this make. Style or Fortune!Give It to Me!

  6. The bumps on the skin come from folicles where the large feathers are pulled. The area with out bumps is underbelly where the feathers are fine. This is a natural skin from a bird, do you propose that fake bumps are added!
