I am going to try and be impartial here but would just like to say that I saw Monica Botkier actually carry her well worn Stevie satchel when I interviewed her in New York but have no idea when Burberry launched theirs. I would also like to mention that Monica Botkier sells 50,000 bags a year (no lie!), she is in a position many (if not ALL) bag designers envy. That said, the Burberry satchel is not a complete twin of the Stevie satchel (they would then be sued right?) but the similarities are uncanny to say the least! The strap around the pocket is replaced with pull strings and the shoulder straps wrap around the bag but other than that? The bags look like twins! It’s kind of like Mary Kate and Ashley… who look almost identical but are fraternal twins with minor differences but are twins nevertheless. (Ashley is an inch taller, Mary Kate has wider set eyes– please don’t ask me why I know this. Too many years of reading gossip mags have turned my brain into a useless mush of nonsense). The biggest difference between the bags, however, is the price. The Botkier Stevie satchel is $650 at Shopbop.com. And the Burberry satchel is $1,395 at Saks I don’t think you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out which bag to get if you like this style.

  1. Neither of these bags are to my taste. Too much of glitter and all that, but if I HAD to choose-well regardless the price,it would be the Burberry one. The Botkier looks s o cheap, indeed as cheap as it is. Luckily I don´t have to buy either of them, hope nobody has to.

  2. Mary Kate and Ashley are fraternal – i didn’t know that?!?!?! Tina, you are just a bottomless pit of information!!! (Not the best image I know, but I couldn’t come up with anything else).

  3. Nah, I don’t think there’s any copying, I mean hasn’t pretty much everything been done already in the designing bags area? I rarely see anything new. The last time I did it was maybe the Dior Gaucho with that kind of weird saddle bag style. I will say though that I bought a bag in this golden-nacre color but maybe a shade more subtle of nacre and is it ever useful! It’s like white or black, really neutral. As for these two bags, I’m not really loving either very much.

  4. I completely agree with Monica. I don’t think there’s a single untouched design idea out there. You could walk through Macy’s and probably find two bags by unknown makers that resembled these two. I need outside pockets and a bag that fits over my shoulder, so these two are okay–not so deep that they become bottomless pits. But . . . they are uninspiring, and I wouldn’t put out for either one, to be honest.

  5. i agree with monica and edie. there’s only so many bag design things you can do, if you’re making a relatively safe, medium range bag. gonna have rouching around the middle? need a thingy in the center to hold it. hmm.. rouching looks stupid on a hobo, better make it a boxy bag with a handle. okay that’s boring… metallic will liven it up! it’s just predictable design process, so i really doubt it was completely stolen one way or the other. thanks tina for not jumping on botkier’s case about it – a lot of people would be all “omg they copied burberry!” honestly… yawn.

  6. Hmm…There are some similarities but so do lots of bags out there. But the Botkier has more of an edge. I don’t like the toggle thing on the Burberry.

  7. My internet has been down ….feels like i lost my right arm for a few days!?! Sounds like your having a ball in Paris T, where is Kelly she hasn’t posted recently…hope she is ok?

  8. For some reason, I think they look completely different. I prefer the Burberry, but what is the material on both bags? Besides the label, is there another reason why the bag may be pricier? (better quality leather?)
