Sex and the City Bags

SITC%20copy%20%282%29.jpg

I found myself with several hours of free time on my hands yesterday morning, and decided to go watch Sex and the City— alone. I have never gone to the movies alone at 10am on a Sunday before but after two hours and 15 minutes of pure mindless entertainment, I was glad I went and can’t wait to do this more often– it was so therapeutic to sit in a theater alone! I was also relieved the movie turned out so enjoyable, after all the hype I almost didn’t go see it. I loved the series and was afraid I would hate the movie but it was as if the show never ended, the girls slipped back into their roles without missing a beat! I don’t want to give too much away for those of you who have not seen it but the movie was a sweetly spun tale about love, friendship, and forgiveness (albeit one filled with mucho product placements). But please do not expect any earth shattering performances, the cast, after all, is merely prop for all the fabulous gowns, shoes and bags! Now, on to the bags, there were so much eye candy for me in each scene, many that we’ve featured here in the past:

Carrie by far had the best bags (with the exception of the Eiffel tower clutch in the opening scene from Timmy Woods). From Hermes, LV, Chanel to glittering clutches I couldn’t identify (yet!), she did not disappoint!

Charlotte unsurprisingly played it safe with totes, from Chanel to the Biern Jenna you guys went nuts over, with a pop of color from a ruched satin Prada clutch and a Valentino satchel in red with roses across the top. She did have one crazy bag, the Fendi furry mess.

Samantha was her usual colorful self. Big bold Chanel bags, the Jimmy Choo Face bag, and several brightly colored totes including a Nancy Gonzalez lovely.

Miranda had a nice selection of diverse bags. I loved the Nancy Gonzalez croc and python bag she carried, the Alexandra McQueen’s metallic elvie was yummy, the Escada Margaretha bag and a strange looking fish bag made of wicker.

Carrie had several Chanel bags on her arm throughout the movie. The classic flap bag (which she wore long with one single chain a la 1985) and the tote with patches. This is the one she carried to Fashion Week with the girls. Not my favorite but it was flashy and appropriate for the occasion.

In the opening scene, Carrie is carrying a crystal Eiffel tower clutch by Beverly Hills bag designer Timmy Woods. She is supposedly showing her love of Paris but whatever– the bag is costumey and kitschy, definitely not my cup of tea– and the price is beyond ridiculous! She was wearing fabulous Dior gladiator platform shoes, though. Eiffel tower bag $3,000 at Patricia Fields.com

Nancy Gonzalez python and croc bag- $3550. This is one of my absolute favorite bags from the movie. At the risk of sounding like a fashion victim, I really want it! Miranda (not my favorite character) had it swinging from her arm in one of the group scenes and it is a scene stealer!

elviemetallic.jpg

Alexander McQueen’s Elvie bag in metallic was toted by Miranda in one of the earlier scenes. I love the elvie and it was great to see a bag that is not on everyone’s radar in the movie. Alexander McQueen – Elvie Croco (Platinum) – $2004

Big builds Carrie a ginormous closet in lieu of a diamond ring, and she walks in with a Vert Anis lizard birkin in 25cm (Hermes lizard bags are never bigger than 25cm due to the small size of the skin). I have a chocolate lizard birkin and a cherry lizard kelly in 25cm but now I’m salivating over the Vert Anis version. I was offered this bag not too long ago and I passed, imagine how much I could have sold it for now that it’s in the movie! It is such a great color, I use my Lindy in Vert Anis Veau Swift with everything.

Samantha’s Nancy Gonzalez bag was featured by Kelly last month. We adore the top zip satchel and ordered ours in all croco, mine is the smaller size. At Bergdorf Goodman. You can also order the matching croc and studded dog collar and leash! Gold studs were a major theme in the movie, bringing on more 80’s flashback!

mirandaescada.jpg

The Escada Margaretha bag is not the norm for Miranda, she’s usually in structured business looking bags so this was a nice change for her. Our intern, Anne, was enamored with this bag months ago before she knew it was on SATC, our young and hip intern is so ahead of trends!

chanelsatctweed.jpg

Co-star Jennifer Hudson was a fresh addition to the cast as Carrie’s assistant, Louise. She sported the Denim patchwork (rented from BBAS), a fringe-y Chanel, and the Motard Firebird which Carrie splurged on after Louise helped put her life back together.

Thank you to all the PR reps who supplied us with the fabulous photos.

  1. I remember there was this one episode where Samantha wanted to buy a red birkin and Carry said how it was totally not Samantha’s style, which sounded like it wouldn’t be her style either. Funny she’s wearing a birkin in the movie now.

Thanks for the SATC bag report. Going to watch the movie tonight!

  2. Fabulous bags and photos. Thank you so much! I want that Nancy Gonzalez, too. It’s so chic and elegant! Now that dog collar, I can see Samantha trying that on for herself 🙂

  3. Great reporting. That’s what I love about this site.

I’ve only attended the movies once by myself on a Sunday morning many, many years ago. I saw “Pretty in Pink” and whenever that comes on, I go back to that morning. I’m glad you were able to enjoy yourself.

  4. There are so many other bags that I didn’t include here– I am waiting for photos from PR reps.

It was like a 2 hour fashion show- love it! Who cares if other fashion writers are saying it’s over hyped. We are having a good time and so are our readers over this SATC hoopla– we shouldn’t let anyone spoil our fun 🙂

Tell me what you think of the movie!!! xoxo

  5. I also saw the movie at 10am alone, but I wasn’t alone because there were scads and scads of women also going alone and so many dressed for the office it was hilarious! The greatest thing happened though. All us women were chattering away, standing in line at the Georges V cinema on the Champs Elysee in Paris. The movie theatre is in a large office building, and this drop-dead gorgeous young woman with the longest damn legs in a black Lanvin (I think) suit and coolest Goyard piece of rolling luggage and Gucci carry-on and beige Chanel bag and matching black and beige Chanel pumps walked past all of us and got on an elevator to go up to an office. All the women were totally silent as she walked passed us completely oblivious to what we were waiting in line for there. As soon as the elevator doors closed several of these Parisian women let out sighs and Oh la, la, la, las and I heard quite a few, Wow, she was hot! I can’t wait to get in there! It was the best preview to a movie I’ve ever seen.

  6. Fantastic report!! Thanks so much Tina!!

Now,about the bags: Carrie’s Chanel is totally not my style, the whole outfit looks ridiculous, the word that springs to my mind-tramp. I am sorry,I can’t help it.

Timmy’s bag-tacky and overpriced,I love Paris too but I remind myself of it by looking at tasteful miniature that sits on my desk.

Nancy Gonzalez bag is lovely but I think I am a bit too young for this one, maybe in 10 years time.

I love Elvie, loved carrying purple version of it,it stands out in the crowd and I actually haven’t seen any on the streets of London just yet!

    Birkin-obviously a classic,divine bags.

I like Escada’s bag a lot, seen Vanessa Williams carrying it,looked fab against her canary yellow dress.

As for Jennifer Hudson-poor thing, all of her character’s bags seem terribly tacky to me!

I love Sex and the City but I don’t get Fielding’s styling,I think she’s overrated as a stylist.

    xoxo

  7. I think I saw Samantha carrying the Nancy Gonzalez croc & cork tote in the ‘sorting-out-the-closet’ scene. Is it? It looks awfully similar 🙂

    LOVED this post!!!

  8. Tina, I Love going to the movies by myself!! I am a stay at home mother of 3 and My most peaceful time is when Im at the theater watching a good film all ALONE!!!! it is one of my FAV things to do!!!! The movie was GREAT!! like u said. it was like being at a fashion show!! I must say I do own a couple of the bags they showed in the movie, Ok more then just a couple but who’s counting!!!

The Nancy Gonzalez bag Miranda had is to DIE!! for….(I too want it) I was sad to see the show end, I have seen every episode like a million times!! (I still watch them) I think I will go and see the movie again on Sunday, I went to the premiere on Tuesday night. Needless to say the theater was packed and I just need it to be me and me….lol…

  9. i didn’t think the movie was all that. the plot was so predictable and i’m not even a SATC fan. the fashion was ok i guess, but not worth the $10.50 for the ticket. BTW, the gown that charlotte wore to the wedding was a work of art.

  10. Note: I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but just in case, don’t read this if you haven’t seen the movie and want to be completely surprised.

    My thoughts on the movie:

    1) Jennifer Hudson’s character was completely unnecessary. I love Jennifer Hudson to death, but I honestly *just wanted to see more of the girls.* And the lines they gave her were ludicrous. SJP: “You gave me my life back.” Her response? “And you gave me Louise Vuitton.” Argh, Michael Patrick King, you can do so much better than that!

    2) This movie was depressing. Most of the people with me agreed. We wanted more laughs, more upbeat power lunch conversations about men.

    3) Severe lack of quotable quotes. If you love the show, you know what I mean. The very few from Samantha were spoiled through the previews.

    4) First time we ever see Big’s perspective (him in the car: “Look at me…”) I see this as a plus to the movie!

    5) Smith and Samantha. Man, they were what made the season finale phenomenal five years ago. If you saw the movie, you can probably guess my feelings about this. 🙁

    6) I loved the Vogue photo shoot, it was beautiful. But too long. This also goes for the fashion show, the New Year’s montage, etc. Too much filler.

    7) The scene with Carrie and Big and the crushed flowers (you know what I mean) was the best acting I’ve seen from SJP in a long time.

    8) I don’t get the timeline at all. The show implies it is 5 years later from the season finale. You can also see it through Lily, Charlotte’s daughter. Yet Carrie is forty? Wasn’t she 38 in the last season? And Samantha is 50?

Conclusion: The show was at its best when the budget was smaller- because the writing and content were most important. This movie, with all the product placement and money being poured into designers- it watered the plot and made the characters one-dimensional. I loved loved loved the fashion. But the show had been able to successfully incorporate fashion and content in the past without the superficiality. I really hope they do have a sequel that puts much more emphasis on the dialogue.

  11. I guess I enjoyed the movie coz I never watched the TV series. Alot of my friends that had watched the TV series were not impressed by the movie version. The reason they look fabulous was the result of great clothes, bags & shoes & a damn good makeup artist. You mean people really think they are beautiful?

  12. I watched it and i LOVE it!!!!!! I got the YSL dress!! I was so thrilled when I saw Carrie Bradshow wearing it.

  13. Susan,

this is why I say the cast was merely prop for the gowns, shoes, and bags 🙂 And yes, totally depressing– I cried so many times but I also laughed.

I enjoyed it. It was entertaining and fun. I didn’t pay attention to the age details and what not. It’s hollywood — people age differently there 🙂

But very good points you brought up!

    xoxo

  14. OMG,I just had a look at Fields website-it’s so psychedelic! The bags she’s selling are gross, especially Timmy Woods Poodle Purse-I think the worst bag I’ve seen in my life-seriously,who buys this stuff?!

  15. Loved the series, loved the movie!

Just an FYI for the comment above, Carrie carried two Birkins and a Kelly in three different episodes of the series – if I remember correctly. A blue Birkin in Season 5, the episode with Aiden’s ex, Nina, who makes “the face” when she meets Carrie. There was Birkin sitting on her lap in Season 6 when they’re all sitting with Samantha during chemo; and then she carried a Kelly in the episode when she watches Brady while Miranda is on her honeymoon (same season).

Also, the movie is supposed to be 3 years later (series ended 2004, movie picks up in 2007). But, really, Carrie should be 41 and Samantha should only be 48 (since in the last season they claimed the ages 38 and 45, respectively). Unless you start thinking about where the birthday falls in the year – and thats too much for me!

Jennifer Hudson – definitely the weakest part of the movie.

  16. One more thing, not necessarily related to fashion but to overall appearance. I didn’t like SJP’s hairdo for the attempted wedding. That bun or whatever it was didn’t make her justice at all. I think she would have looked much more beautiful with her hair down. Her face has a long shape and with the hair down looks much-much cuter. Too bad for the amazing Vivienne Westwood wedding dress. Actually, I think the way her hair looked in the Vogue photo shoot with the dress was perfect. And I know she’s not a beauty, but she has a “je ne sais quoi” and she can look cute when she chooses the right way of emphasizing her strong points.

  17. Dianne- thanks for the info. I don’t know if you’re still reading these comments but I have a question. If it’s supposed to be 3 years ago, why did Smith imply to Samantha in the movie how they’ve known each other for 5 years? (he said it was all about her the first 3 years of the relationship and now it was all about him in the next two years)..? my head hurts.

  18. Susan, I hear you :). I had a similar doubt myself. I guess we just have to take it as it is, just like the weird ageing patterns of the characters. And truth be told, the one thing that I truly disliked about SATC THE MOVIE was the fact that Samantha and Smith split up.

He was the one man with whom she could have stayed on the long-term. If she didn’t feel love or a strong bond with him after all they went through together than I doubt that she could ever feel that for someone else. And turning 50…c’mon, I mean a woman can be extremely attractive and sexy in her 50s as well, but it’s not all about sex anymore.

I get it that we all have needs, but Samantha’s character seems to have stopped somewhere in her hormonal teens. She basically dumped Smith because she needed to feel sexy again, aka to sleep with one man a day again? Every age in life has its charms and sometimes you need to appreciate deeper things than sex and simply GROW UP. She was envying Dante because he got to sleep with a different chick every day, like she used to do with guys. Is that true happiness? It was disappointing to see her throwing that relationship away. It just felt incredibly superficial.

  19. can i be reincarnated as Charlotte’s daughter?? the girl is adorable @ five years old, and her pink Chanel mini-flap and her Lieber cupcake purse were too cute for words. please feature these!

  27. hi. in your article you identified all the bags in the headlining pic except the one in the top left hand corner. could you tell me what that one is? thanks 😀

    Thanks

  30. Does anyone know where I can find the bag that Charlotte carried to the fashion show during fashion week? I’m pretty sure it’s a Fendi, but I can’t find the actual bag. I know it’s not the one they are featuring on bag, borrow, or steal though. Please help!

  31. Does anyone know where I can find the bag that Charlotte carried to the fashion show during fashion week? I’m pretty sure it’s a Fendi, but I can’t find the actual bag. I know it’s not the one they are featuring on bag, borrow, or steal though. Please help!

  32. Hi does anyone know what bag Carry had on her way to and in the library for the first time (she even opened it in the library) when she discovered the beautiful ceiling and wanted that for her wedding location. The bag is huge and light brown with wide flat shoulder straps.

Thanks (Bag borrow or steal does not have it)!

  33. does anyone know the name of the green satin ruched prada clutch that charlotte wears when they’re eating in hotel ? miranda teases her and says she has “pudding in her prada.” i’m dying to know the name of this prada bag.. thanks !!

  34. Who makes the bag Carrie is carrying when she goes to see Charlotte in the hospital and in the last closet seen with Big?

  35. The Chanel Carrie had in the DVF shop when she was talking to Samantha on the phone, where can I get one.Never watched the show and only saw the movie at the weekend !!!!!

  36. The bag that Carrie has in the library is by Kisim. It’s the ‘cube’ purse. 🙂 If you want more info, check out the movie companion book. It breaks all of the girls’ outfits in the back.

  37. Does anyone know what style Charlotte’s prada clutch was. Its from when they are in Mexico and she brings the chocolate pudding in her purse.

  38. It’s funny reading this eight years later. Few of these bags have held up well – besides the timeless Hermes and Chanel, of course. They all look so dated now.

  39. What was the brand of briefcase that Miranda had in the episode around ring a ding ding. I need a new briefcase and I love that briefcase
