Barneys New York goes 50% off! Best of the sale!!!

I am starting to feel sorry for the retail stores, in all the years I’ve been avidly shopping for sport, I have never seen current season must have items go to 50% off BEFORE Thanksgiving! So sad but we must do our part ladies! We must prevail and keep our economy going!

Let’s start with the online sale at Barneys New York, up to 50% off. The Balenciaga Cherche bag in chic smoke leather needs no introduction. All I have to say is $1,489 (was $2,475, 40% off). Get it here.

Next up is another Balenciaga– the Rosso cut out lambskin clutch in red, perfect for the holidays! $599 from $995.

Jil Sander also offers up useful and stylish totes in multi colors and leathers. I love Jil Sander, you can never tell what season her bags are from because they are so simple and timeless. Some might say boring but hey, a boring tote is always useful! (Jump for more!)

Barneys private label is as good as any designer they carry. These adorable little satin clutches at $359 $595.

  1. What a bargain!! A friend of mine told me that Saks in Beverly Hills was discounting all of the designer fall bags at 70% off!!!

  2. The early sales raise all sorts of questions about value, design and quality. In the blink of a price tag change, these bags are now worth less.

This week I had a great grandparent who survived the Great Depression pass away at the healthy age of 96, and he always said, “Somthing is only worth what another person will pay for it.” This entire fall season I’ve been out of sorts, and simply sat on the sidelines. Every day banker hubby comes home and says that the bouncing check list of mid size business customers he lends to grows a little longer, and the horrid conversation with long term clients walking away happens weekly.

All of which only makes me more cautious of purchasing anything that I don’t looooove. There is lots of middle of the road design out there of dubius sweat shop quality, and the prices are dropping for all but the highest of the highest end. I wonder how much lower it will go?

  3. Don’t feel the rush to buy. The stores will be at 80 off after Christmas. Maybe even before. Many have gone to 60 already in New York

  4. Does the Bag Snob sell its email list? I recently subscribed to a contest and noticed more spam and targeted ads in my inbox. Considering this is a new email addy, I am wondering if you sell email lists or share them with the other contest vendors?

  5. I don’t agree with the “we must do our part ladies… keep the economy going.” bit. We have been driving the economy for years, when will men suddenly feel the need to spend half their paycheck on a lanvin handbag or a pair of beautiful crocodile manolos?

Everything in the advertising business is targeted towards us, and women have been the target of our consumer economy for so many years that now, I feel proud when I stop spending money. Why is it that men make the advertisements telling us to buy yogurt, the right razor, the right deodorant, the right household cleaning products, even the right painkiller to take when we realize the burden we are given? Suddenly it’s not enough to raise a family, we must now also hold high-power jobs, and take the “double-duty” of raising children, working full-time, and then spending 800 dollars on a pair of louboutin’s that were 300 five years ago?

I also don’t particularly feel bad for the retail stores. Prices have been going up dramatically over the past decade, and as a luxury consumer, I agree with Bobbi about questioning the value of each piece. I remember spending 3-400 on shoes and thinking I was spending a lot. Suddenly the same brands are 8-900 dollars for the same shoe? It’s just not worth it.

no thank you. I’ll wait until things are 70 percent off, and consider it some sort of pay back for a decade of ripping me off.

  6. Tina! Yes, the B´s vintage clutch is nice and the price is NOW very correct. Something like this would be practical when traveling. It is light to carry in the suitcase and you can stuff inside it too!

  7. I must agree with emily and bobbi’s earlier posts.

The fact that high-end retail stores can and do mark down these pieces only makes one wonder, “what’s it really worth?”

I can only speculate, but it seems to me that over priced is as over priced does…..if you’re willing to spend outrageous amounts of money on a handbag, more power to you. But, if in the grand scheme of things you realize that they are truly over priced articles and you’re willing to wait awhile and purchase them at a greatly reduced price, then that’s power and more people, (not just us gals), should start trying to make that their norm when it comes to purchasing bigger ticket items in the future.

The current economic picture demands that we become more informed, smarter, consumers who really look before we leap.

  8. Hi Ladies!

If you really want a bag then you should pay the price it’s worth to have the power to wear it. Don’t forget that your arm holds a statement. Don’t just buy a bag for the price. Men wear wristwatches, you are wearing a work of Art.
