Michelle Obama Woos in Jason Wu at Inaugural Ball

As Barack Obama ushers in a new era for the United States, Michelle Obama begins her own revolution with a new era for the First Lady wardrobe. Truly, gone are the days of rhetoric and predictability, which is personified in her choice of dress for the historic inaugural celebration. No more fuddy duddy. Hello young, vibrant and dynamic!

Jason Wu fits right in with this administration’s themes of fresh faces, new starts and change. Just like Obama, he is young (26 years old), multi-cultural (Wu was born in Taiwan, lived in Vancouver, Tokyo and Paris and now lives in New York) and is new to the scene (he debuted his first collection in February 2006). How fitting, right? And fitting it was, Michelle stole the show with the gorgeous, fluttering gown that accentuated her hourglass figure. Look at her arms! Holy moly, she must do like 500 dips and bicep curls a day!! This was a full length gown with a bit of a train which caused her some problems during her dance.

It is rumored, and looks to be true, that the asymmetrical strap was added in to make the gown easier to manage while she attended the 10 balls scheduled. Pragmatic, I like that!! I tried to verify this fact with Jason Wu’s PR firm in Japan (they were the only ones at work) but they could not confirm. I have messages to his US reps but I’m sure I was not the only one. No doubt many designers sent gowns hoping it makes it to the limelight, this gown however was purchased some time ago and Jason Wu saw it on Michelle like the rest of us, on TV. CNN reported that he began crying. It is safe to say that Jason Wu will be enjoying some time in the limelight himself. Jason Wu evening wear are between $3000-$6000.

Right: Spring 2009, this gown says “I am a sexy woman in charge!” – she has proven that she can do flouncy with command, which is my definition of a modern woman!

  1. i don’t know how people think that the jason wu ball dress is nice. the white stuff on it look like lint (i feel like plucking it out) and it doesn’t do justice to her shape at all!

  2. Are you insane?

She looks amazing and that gown is to die for! The white applique add texture to this gorgeous gown!

  3. I have to agree with Alisha on this. I don’t think the gown is flattering on her at all. I think the shoulder strap looks like an after thought also. I am sure she had a better gown to pick from.

  4. I thought Mrs. Obama was fabulous in this beautiful, flowing gown. It was not the typical stiff, boring ball gown you normally see on First Ladies. She did have a little trouble dancing in it though because of the little bit of train. Again, she is a beautiful woman and most of her clothing choices are perfect for the occasion.

  5. She was stunning in that ball gown!! goooorgeous. now the gold suit she wore during the day, I bet she was freezing her tail off!! poor first lady having to brave the cold in no coat or jacket! someone should have thrown a fur on her!

  6. I’m glad the First Lady went with an unknown-now famous designer–good for her, and BRAVO for Mr.Jason Wu, she looked stunning!!!! =)

  7. I LOVE JASON WU and his designs and I’m very happy that Mrs. Obama picked him as a designer (esp since I’m Chinese/American too:). HOWEVER, this dress was so NOT flattering for her figure, esp when she slouched. I usually like her choices and style, esp. the Narciso Rodriguez beige/black suit she had on to celebrate Martin Luther King day. But if anyone is truly honest, this was a miss rather than a hit.

  8. My first reaction to the dress was WOW she looks beautiful and romantic! I can see how it would get mixed reactions, especially just in photos the image is too static to give you a sense of how it flows. I like the choice of white, it emphasizes the idea of a fresh start.

  9. She looked beautiful in that dress. It should also be noted that the only other first ladies to wear white to the inaugural balls were Nancy Reagan and Jacqueline Kennedy, the other two most fashionable first ladies.

  10. Speaking of First Lady Michelle Obama:

Michelle Obama is a racial-minority individual, and in her heart and mind she inevitably does not endorse hate crimes committed by George W. Bush.

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

Many people know what Bush did.

And many people will know what Bush did—even to the end of the world.

    Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

    Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

I am not sure where I had read it before, but anyway, it is a linguistically excellent statement, and it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memories so they never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—off the top of my head—I think the quotation came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.
