Natalie Imbruglia’s Chanel Bag: Snob or Slob?

np.jpg    CHANEL.JPG

This black and white lambskin Chanel bag with interlaced chain is a reinterpretation of the classic flap bag and is from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection. I’m not particularity fond of the way the color blocking is done, though at least the colors make it fairly versatile when it comes to matching the bag with an outfit. That said I would never wear a bag of this size to a formal event! This style definitely doesn’t beat the classic flap bag and I think it’s a slob with Natalie Imbrulia’s gown. 1. Totally inappropriate with this gown. What was her stylist thinking of? It makes her dress look odd in the photos as well – see http://celeborama.net/forum/Thread-natalie-imbruglia-the-serpentine-gallery-summer-party-09-07-09-x9 – because she can’t work out what to do with her hands when she’s carrying it. Pose no 1 with the link for example would work much better with a clutch. Others at the event wore clutches – see http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/fashionpicturegalleries/3354909/In-pictures-The-Serpentine-Gallerys-Summer-Party.html

Re the bag, the proportions look a bit off, but maybe that’s because of how the colour blocking is done. I wouldn’t buy it but it’s not awful either. For a more casual summer occasion, I can see that it would be fine, although maybe because of the way it appears so long, maybe it would work better on a taller woman?

  2. Please ladies, let’s think outside the box shall we…this bag looks great with the red dress. Who wants to be like any other boring lady walking down the red carpeet with a clutch or 2.55 bag….big YAWN.

  3. Unfortunately, slob. The shape of it has me thinking that if it were brown, it would look like she was carrying with her a paper bag lunch.

  4. i’m shocked because i usually agree with manbag…but this bag is awful! if i saw it in the hamptons…i wouldn’t be offended, but in front of a step and repeat paired with that gorgeous gown?!? NO MA’AM! i love this post sharon! i know some of the ultra snobs were giving you a hard time, but i think you’re great.

  5. I’m not familiar with the celeb. But what was Chanel thinking??? Definite slob, put away in moratorium, never to be seen again!

  6. Thank you Michael St James I appreciate that:) Glad you’re enjoying so far! I’m in the hamptons right now actually and have a feeling I’ll see at least one person with it at the polo games tomorrow..hopefully not paired with a Lilly dress will keep you posted ha!

BTW love the comments saying that were it brown it would look like a paper bag..so true!

  7. I take your point but really the point of Ms Imbruglia going to the Serpentine Gallery Party (or as The Telegraph put it, the “social event of the summer”) is to raise or maintain her profile; in other words, to have her photograph taken. Look at the photos in the link. She clearly does not do what to do with the bag because her poses are all designed for her to be holding a little clutch or baguette. If she really wants to carry that bag, then she needs to learn how stand for a photographer whilst she holds it. It dangles there like a string bag in the market. I almost expect to peer in and see a couple of tomatoes nestling up to some cheese. It wouldn’t even matter if she looked good with it in person since it doesn’t photograph well.

For the record, a 2.55 would have been bad with this dress too. The Serpentine Gallery summer party is one of those occasions when you could wear a short summer frock or you could wear a full-length gown so here maybe she just went for the mid-point between the garden party look and the evening clutch, and missed it.

Personally, I don’t like clutches much. They always get in the way as you can rarely put them down so you’ve basically only ever got one hand free. Then you can’t fit much more in them than a lipstick, a compact and folding money since the bigger you go, the harder they are to carry and the more cumbersome they are. However, if you’re having your photograph taken they come into their own since they don’t clutter up the image so you can focus on the person. And to come back to my original point, since that is the entire reason she will have traipsed out to Hyde Park in the first place, she should do what it takes to get a better photograph.

  8. I first saw this in a Chanel boutique and I thought the same thing about it looking like a paper lunch bag. However, I don’t think it is really all that bad…it would be cute with a casual outfit or jeans, but it definitely isn’t suited to be worn with a gown…at least I don’t think so, but what do I know 🙂

  9. That bag would have worked well with a casual outfit. The classic flap would have worked with Natalie’s dress.

  10. I expect to see this bag at the Chanel outlet store in Woodbury Commons in about 2 years time. While it is not a hideous bag, it is a bit more casual looking much like a smaller version of a tote bag. I would purchase it at a very reduced price, but with a dress, would always carry my timeless clutch.

  11. Like the bag but she is styled very poorly. Looks like she was thrown together at the last minute with a bunch of leftovers. I would have a problem getting what I needed out of the bag. Too long and narrow. But it would be cute with a different casual outfit.

  12. I agree with some comments, bag is like the white elephant of the outfit, completely inappropriate and just kills the formal look of the gown.

That being said, I think the purse is a refreshing departure from the oversized, slouchy purses we’ve been used to for so long. Don’t get me wrong, I like slouch and oversized, but when I saw this in HK a few weeks ago I was craving for it because it is big enough to hold what you really need, and has a structure that would make a tank/jeans or blouse/shorts combo look complete and chic.

    I’d buy it.

  13. Slob, especially with the dress. The proportions of this is terrible! Would people really buy this just because it’s Chanel? Proof that money doesn’t buy you good taste.

It’s a scary mix between a lunch sack like everyone else said and one of those backpacks with the drawstrings people take to the gym, except they superimposed a Chanel logo over it.
