Kimora Lee Simmons in Tory Burch: Snob or Slob?

f6f80eDf36A8ea8F__gallery.png

This is going to sound mean (and on Yom Kippur out of all the days!), but I don’t mean for it to come off as malicious. There are a number of Tory Burch accessories that I like, but can’t bring myself to buy because every time I turn a corner I see someone like Kimora Lee Simmons wearing one of them and I think “eech nooo I can’t get that same thing!” Tory Burch reminds me of Juicy Couture in that way. They both have great buys (seriously! Just put aside all the Juicy Couture decor/ad cheesiness), but the JAP-y/WASP-y meets tacky factor often associated with the people who wear them stops me from buying either of the brands. Maybe that’s stupid of me, because I legitimately like the bag pictured above and the price point fits. There’s also a fab matching bracelet.

Would you buy Kimora’s Tory Burch Studded Satchel ($595)?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. You are a snob and a hypocrite. It amazes me that you can take someone as disgusting and skanky as Kate Moss and put her on a pedestal and yet you put down Kimora Lee. The name of you blog is appropriate you are a snob of the worst kind.

  2. What do you mean by JAP-y/WASP-y??

If you’re using JAP to mean “Japanese”, you’re walking on thin ice!!

Even if you don’t mean it that way, please be careful of how you use words like that…

  3. I have to say that I agree with you, Sharon. I also dislike the overuse of logos on all Juicy “Couture”/Tory Burch merchandise (although I actually don’t see a garish logo on the bag pictured). In response to the other comments, this is your blog, so you can have whatever opinion you want!

  4. I agree. Kimora Lee Simmons is so tacky, I love that she thinks she is so fab and she is really just ugh. Plus she acts like a total snob herself. If the wrong person carries a brand I am totally put off.

  5. Anything put on Kimora Lee Simmons is tacky and gross, including her 35 Birkins (which she felt the need to point out in a Vanity Fair article about 3 years ago). Now that’s being snobby and tacky – pointing out such a fact

  6. I get your point, but just want to add something.

While this blog is entertaining, I have seen the posted pics of the claimed “Bag Snobs.” Since you all want to be “snobby” do you actually think youre “pretty enough” to be? I mean, no offense- but men don’t really notice handbags. Women do. Men notice beautiful women. None of you seem to make the cut, yet you obviously think your bag choices put you on some higher level. Its strange really???

Not sure if i would care what any of you thought of my bags, since if I saw any of you in public- I wouldn’t look twice. Im so sorry. You guys are honest- and so is this reader!

  7. That is the greatest comment I have ever read on this blog!!! And that’s just because it is SO true! You nailed it Stella!! KUDOS 😉

  8. The last reason why I would buy anything item is to impress a man. I buy things because I like them & enjoy them. I know my boyfriend loves it when I take the time to put in some effort to look put together.

Sharon does not write because she thinks she is on a higher level, she is just communicating her opinion on certain fashion trends. Obviously fashion is subjective and you do not have to agree and Sharon does not expect you to.

This is why she ends her entry with “Would YOU buy..” leaving her opinion up for discussion – and not insult.

You are lucky to be able to have an anonymous place to be rude (aka the internet) because I doubt you would ever say any of these thing face to face.

  9. I also think Sharon is being an hypocrite and just a tad stupid (she likes some of the things Tory Burch/ juicy do and wont buy because of association).

Having said that i dont like either brand because i think they just sell overpriced tat.

The bag is acceptable but i would not buy it the gold is too yellow for my taste, and Kimora’s shoes rock.

    But what is a WASP?

  10. Stella

    you are obviously a moron.

Sharon, I agree with what you’re saying but I think Kimora rocks it! I wouldn’t mind this cute bag, who cares who else has it!

  11. My point in this post was really just to say that in the same way that many of us buy something because a certain celebrity has worn it, there are many of us who won’t buy something because a certain celebrity has worn it — goes both ways and I was curious if you all agreed. I don’t think I’m better than anyone at all and never claimed to be a beauty queen..this is all just opinion and I’m open to anyone else’s.

Also just to clarify, JAP is not Japanese. Maybe JAP/WASP are more commonly used terms in NYC, but typically JAP is used to describe a young spoiled girl, while WASP is used to describe older Park Ave-types.

Lastly, no matter what you look like I think you should always shop for yourself never for a man!! And if my three year relationship with my BF taught me anything is that if a man really loves you he won’t care about your bags, shoes, or whatever as long as you’re happy and confident!

  12. WASP is white Anglo-Saxon Protestant. A very generic term for sorority-type white girls. Personally I think those shoes make her legs look fat. IMHO, 35 Birkins is plain and simple flaunting your wealth. But if that’s what gets your rocks off, ……….

  13. ManBag your are just as hypocritical and these so called bag snobs. How many times has Tina told us how many Birkins, Givenchy, and just about how many other bags she has or is planning to get. Please, don’t single Kimora and idolize the rest of these tacky whoring celebs. Most of the people who comment on this site are flaunting their wealth and possessions including you ManBag. The next time you comment about which purchase you just made think about you Kimora comment. This is a blog where folks are constantly flaunting their bag purchases I detect some serious sour grapes.

  14. Stella, this blog is read mostly by women who notice bags. It’s not called *How to get a man Snob*

I like this bag but not worth the trouble.

  15. I don’t like this Tory Burch because it is obvious. Kimora is blatant and obvious (which can sometimes make for a very entertaining spectacle).

  16. If you keep up with any of the blogs out today, the bloggers all talk about what they are wearing and buying and what they think of the latest in fashion. Isn’t it why we keep coming back? For their opinions?

  17. Poor Sharon probably did not expect this attack to start her week.

What I’m most surprised at is the flood of vitriol from so many readers against the snobs. Why do you all bother coming to this site if you hate them so much? Just curious because I find them entertaining and a good source for bag knowledge.

  18. I like this bag and would carry it. The price point is very reasonable and I have seen the bags in person, they are a bit glam but its not over the top so this bag can be great for an everyday bag.

  19. I think its so funny that everyone gets all upset about who said this or who they think is a snob or not a snob, etc..

First of all this blog is meant to be humorous, funny and even tacky at times and somewhat informative and opinionated. The whole point of the blog is for the bag snobs to give their opinions about each bag! Its not the gospel nor is it to be taken too serious! Its for fun and I read this blog for entertainment and also because I like to read about fashion and handbags in particular.

I don’t think by writing this blog that anyone is trying to say they are better than anyone else. Just my two cents…keep up the good humor and everyone else needs to chill out, its just a blog about handbags. (:

  20. Yes, if you’re an idiot who needs to have your decisions and purchases validated by pretentious clueless women. Talk about being dictated to.

  21. Please Sharon just comments on the bags. This is the 2nd time in less than a week that you have used the term WASP and now JAP. I have been more than taken aback as these terms are meant to be unkind they are ridiculous sterotypes of race, class, and relgion. Enough already.

  22. I like the bag and I’m just so happy to see Tory Burch merchandise without that fugly logo! I’m not sure why all the hostility toward Kimora is necessary? She’s fabulous and I would think that everyone would appreciate the fact that she’s carrying such a cheap and chic bag when she has croc birkins at home. Shopping to impress men is laughable! Let’s face it…you’d all be naked carrying a stylish can of cold beer. Lastly, I think it’s stupid to let what celebrities wear dictate your clothing purchases Sharon.

  23. OK, here is my take on this. This is a handbag blog with lots of colorful commentary. I seriously doubt anyone, especially the BagSnobs, ever sets out to purposely offend anyone else with their comments. Actually, I think at the end of the day, one of the main intents of the reviews and the resultant commentary is to emphasize how different and wonderful all our tastes are. What brings a smile to my face about this particular handbag is that I personally would not carry it as it is not my taste, but I love to see someone who will carry it and who hopefully loves and enjoys every minute of the bag. I think you have to come into this blog light-heartedly and NOT take yourself too seriously…

  24. Wow – nice to start insulting the bagsnobs on their looks. Way to stay classy and above the fray! A hint: criticisms are more effective when you don’t stoop to playground “you’re not pretty” level.

  25. Heavens, such vitrol and talk about taking a comment out of context. We are on a blog called BagSnob where such things are expected – and prove me wrong if you can, but I don’t think Tina or Kelly have ever gone out of their way to say exactly how many Birkins they own. Ms. Kimora was going on and on about her material possessions to a worldwide magazine – that’s called classless – I’ve read the article, have you?

  26. The bag is just OK – a satchel with studs *yawn*. I wouldn’t be interested in this one due to the seen-it-already-forty-different-ways-this-season factor. That said, I don’t really conisder Kimora Lee Simmons to have the best taste, so…if I was madly in love with it, would seeing it on Kimora’s arm change my mind? Dunno. No more than seeing it on the arm of someone I admired would make me want it. Truth is, to me this bag is borderline, so maaaaaybe Kimora pushes me over to the “no thanks” side of the fence. But if I saw her carrying a Muse? Yeah, that bag would still be fabulous no matter what.

  27. Wow! You can read and you like the snobs get to determine who has class and who doesn’t. Well I didn’t read the article and I still say she has just as much class as the snobs and more than you manbag. Yes, it is a site about bags and there are women on here bragging about their bag collection everyday. A bragging celebrity, blogger, or commenter are all the same. I’ve even read posts where you prattle on about your possessions. The point is we all do it so. KIMORA IS FAB and I hate to write this but you are probably jealous and Sharon has proven to be insensitive and elitist.

  29. Thanks, Betsy Bag, that’s what’s important that you purchase a bag you like not one based on the popularity of the wearer. Sharon rendered herself ridiculous by her comments. Basically, saying that she has too much class to carry a bag because it is carried by someone she has disdain for. In my book she is beneath Kimora.

  30. I completely agree with Sharon, i would never buy either Tory Burch nor Juicy Couture bags/shoes. The logos on both brands are simply hideous. I can’t stand to see the TB logo any more which is too bad as some of her shoes/bags look great but not w/that logo. The vast majority of comments in this blog are completly out of line and the people should be ashamed of themselves! This is a blog about bags and should not be used to hurl personal insults at people, wow, what class that shows. I assume that people who stoop to that level are simply jealous, which than again puts everything back in perspective.

  31. Hello loves,

I just arrived in NYC and read all of your comments. Wow! Have to say I got a good chuckle over the comments posted by Stella and Anon.

We adore Sharon, she’s the smartest and hardest working little snob we’ve ever had. Lets all play nicely, shall we?

  32. This is a tough one.

I agree with the essence of Sharon’s comment, which I believe to be hitting at the phenomenon of how association very strongly affects perception.

To look at it in another light, think about cars. At one point, a Cadillac was a very aspirational vehicle for most people. They saw that successful people drove these cars, and therefore Cadillac = success.

Over time, other brands surpassed Cadillac in perceived prestige. However, for people who grew up in the time when they were more highly ranked in the public eye, they are still a coveted status symbol.

Now that the people who grew up with that association ingrained in them are aging, the perception of many is that Cadillac = old.*

Same kind of idea, but the point is that we naturally associate objects with the people we see using them. No judgment on whether or not that is a bad thing, but it is part of the way a brain processes.

But for Sharon, and this coming from someone who frequently suffers from foot-in-mouth and is trying to improve, most sentences that start with “This is going to sound mean…” do not lead to positive responses.

*(I am not, for the purposes of the example, including the way public image of Cadillac has changed since their introduction of the Escalade. This is because I see Escalade as a brand concept that is separate from the parent company.)

  33. In Sharon’s support…people who actually ARE japs or wasps rarely get mad when you call them the same (I have friends from Virginia who proudly display copies of the preppie handbook on their coffee tables). KLS is tacky, although amusing. I like some of tory and juicy’s stuff, but agree that they both go way overboard with the logos. I think for this money/design foley & corinna or rebecca minkoff would be better bets than this bag. Seeing KLS carrying something I was on the fence about would probably make me want it less..and there’s nothing wrong with that…I think that it’s worse to want something that’s kind of ugly because a celebrity has it, than to be put off of something that’s middle of the road because someone with bad taste has it.

  34. Personally, I don’t like bags with large logos. I recognize that’s a personal preference, in part shaped by my own whims but undoubtedly influenced by larger cultural patterns. Many of the commentators are right to point out that celebrity behavior and buying patterns, as disseminated in traditional and new media, shape the responses of the individuals who consume that media. Kimora excels in fashioning an image that centers her within this milieu.

As a daily (okay, sometimes twice daily) reader of this blog, I find fascinating the distinction between those who take offense at the term “JAP” (Jewish American Princess) but not “WASP” (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). What are the influences of chronology, geography, culture, economics, and power that produce that type of response?

  35. I think that KLS looks amazing. The bag cannot be worked by many however she knows how to.

As for the term JAP VS WASP getting more heat…well I think its for the simple reason that many may not know what WASP means.

  36. This is a stupid post. Kimora probably has more Hermes bags in her closet than everyone in your staff; add it up. She is also an amazing business woman. Lady Phat is your dream comp for your business. Stop the hate. Are you going to throw your Hermes bags away, because she wears it. Probably not.

Your blog would be better if you focused in on differentiating value and luxury. People are confused about how to spend. I confess that I am. Especially, when there is a high likelihood that my purchase will hit the 70 percent off rack. Women should be buying Oscar, Bottega, Mendel and Herrera (you name your go to pieces) if they don’t want to miss for big events. And they should be buying other brands for fun. Your blog could add value on figuring out these dilemmas ( eg explain how to wear Marni rather than hating on it)

I was very disappointed in this post. It was so foul on so many levels

  37. I understand that there are some women that are not viewed as “stylish” or “chic”. But that makes this world so interesting because of the variety of people and tastes. Anyway this is a blog about bags! I just think that sometimes the comments made can be more tacky than the alleged person. Tastefulness is more than just what you wear. Its how you conduct yourself, what you say, how you say certain things. I just think that instead of writing a bitingly witty critique on this bag, what was written was just insipid.

  38. Hi Debra,

I enjoy constructive criticism like yours. And I absolutely agree with you, I strive to educate myself and (hopefully) our readers on building a bag wardrobe that stands the test of time and trend. Actually, it is why I am here in New york right now, I am filming a couple of bag segments on luxury (true luxury, not what the celebs are wearing) and building a bag wardrobe for NBC’s new show.

    Thanks for your thoughtful response.

  39. Sharon needs to learn how to write smartly. Big time.

Tina and Kelly also write about their likes and dislikes, but do you see them getting into “troubles” like this?

Try to focus on the bag first, then you can move on to the picture and criticise whether she is wearing the bag well. When you have built your case, people won’t care so much if you throw in a sentence on how you personally don’t like her.

  40. 🙂

Anon, we put ourselves out here on the blog and do not expect everyone to love us. We dish it out, we ‘ve learned to take it, too. It’s always good to hear what everyone thinks, regardless if it’s scathing or adoring.

And I have no doubt Kimora (like Posh) has WAY more birkins than me but I love my Hermes bags regardless.

  41. My last word on this and I will be moving on.

Sharon was hired to write about celeb bags (Kelly and I have no clue who half these starlets are!) so of course she will have an opinion on the person carrying the bag.

Just like some of you who find us obnoxious and boastful, Sharon has her opinions on the people she writes about, too. And please remember she is only 24, finding her voice. No need to be so harsh on her.

Thanks, everyone. Now, about bags– wait til you see the emerald alligator Tod’s sent over to film. They made NBC insure it! Gorg!!!

  42. While I agree that Sharon did make her point rather bluntly, it’s naive at best to say that what celebrities wear doesn’t influence the purchases of the general populace. The renewed popularity of the Chanel 2.55 is an example, very few younger girls/women wore the bag until younger celebrities were regularly seen carrying it. You buy similar clothes to those worn by celebrities/people who share your aesthetic sensibilities and conversely avoid items worn by people you think are badly dressed. And yes, I do think Kimora is badly dressed, in that picture at least. One of the key components of style is dressing appropriately for the occasion, and she appears to be wearing a party dress and silk stilettos to the shops which is …unfortunate.

  43. Tina, your defensive defense of Sharon does say a lot about you and completely contradict what you and this site claim to strive for. For instance, how can someone provide a fair assessment of bags if they judge it by the people that carry them? Sharon started off her piece with a defensive stance, which she knew would be controversial, and proceed to make an a__ of herself.

I love when you guys show well made inexpensive bags and I think that you do an excellent good job of presenting bags from all price ranges. However, if the reviews of brands are going to be based on who wears the bag then where’s no integrity? Sharon turned it into one of those bitchy gossip sites and went way beyond judging the bag with the outfit but judging the woman.

  44. Hey Anon

wth, we are all tired of ur stupid rants!

the snob girls r gracious and not blocking u from commenting. thatz what I’d do if u come to my site and leave stupid remarks. Nobody carez what u think. Take a chill pill.

  45. I love this Tory Burch bag. It is a great ‘almost over the top but not’ bag. Aside from who is or isn’t wearing it, I have wanted this bag since the day I saw it. Just wish it was a lil bigger. 🙂

  46. i grew up a WASP who hung with JAPS. and the JAPS called themselves JAPS. and the WASP thing was not really brought up out of lack of interest i guess. but honestly the way you use those terms here actually does sound offensive.

  47. Seriously, I just started reading this site and am turned off by it. Not worth reading really… Talk about classless ranting about bags. If you have class, you have class. Period.

  48. Kimmora Lee is tacky no matter how her fans try to spin it. She goes on about her fabulosity and she is far from it. She is half Korean but pretends that she is Japanese. what is up with that? I agree with you Sharon!

  49. Are you f’ing kidding me? Who are you calling an idiot? My co-workers and I come to the site for information on bags. We decide what we want to buy but we do like to read what they have to say. And by the way it sounds like you work for Kimora, why are you so defensive?

  50. apparently you don’t.

what is going on with this site? all these rude comments from riff raffs such as above.

  51. We all aim for success and when we get there , unfortunatley there are haters,,,,,,,,,,, to all the haters……..tuff luck, when you become a lover of success, you to will become a success. I applaud Kimora and Sharon and the bag snobs. Continued success to all.

  52. Thank you for pointing it out. I simply did not know 🙁 It was a racial term (with a different meaning) that I have a bit of trauma about, so I guess I was being too sensative…

  53. Kimora Simmons is ubertacky and plainfully disconnected from her constituents–she looks like a NatGeo Special.
