Beatrice Boyle Face Print Bag

beatric_boyle_face_bag.jpg

I debated even putting such a scary bag on our nice and pretty site but I need to make a comment about this whole obsession with vampires and zombies. Am I the only one here who finds the subject distasteful? Annoyingly, those obsessed will argue that vampires and zombies are in fact 2 separate subject matters. Whatever. I can’t even watch horror movie previews but that’s just me. I just don’t understand why anyone would want this dreadful face on a bag! Bags are supposed to make you happy, jubilant and passionate not scared. At least it’s cheap, at Browns Fashion for $81.31.

  1. I kind of like the bag – its very striking and dramatic. However, I wouldn’t spend more than $20 on it (how many times can you really wear something like this), and I agree *wholeheartedly* about the vampires and zombies! Its such an icky subject!

  2. I’m with Rach, even if you liked this bag (I don’t but I think I know some people who might) how many times could you wear it?

Isn’t a huge part of the appeal of snob worthy bags that the quality means you will be able to use these bag for years and years if you so desire. But this is too weird to wear on a daily or even weekly basis, even ignoring long term.

Also, even for those into the macabre this isn’t an interesting bag. it’s just a weird printed tote. I don’t think this should be more $30.

  3. The face reminds me of some of the characters you see in horror video games like Silent Hill. In other words, not a good thing. I agree with you. If a face is going to be put on a bag, make it something beautiful or ultra-modern/artistic.

  4. I am a HUGE horror/slasher movie fan. SAW has to be my all time favorite. With that being said, I am a teacher and would use this bag to carry all of those papers that I have to grade. There’s no way that I could use this everyday as a handbag. On top of that, $29.99 is the max that I would shell out for it.

  5. I am a HUGE horror/slasher movie fan (SAW is my fave). I like the tote, but I don’t find it horrifying. With that being said, I am a teacher so I could use this to carry all of the papers that I have to grade. Other than that, I couldn’t see myself wearing it on a daily basis.

  6. I love it and it will be perfect for the hot & grimey NYC summer. This bag is currently on my wishlist at Browns along with the matching tank. So picture me, my bag, tank and some black drop crotch pants and strappy/edgy Margiela mens sandals…….NYC chic. I don’t know why I haven’t bought these yet, thx for the reminder.

PS:I never got the vampire/zombie reference. I just thought messy “IT” girl ala Ke$ha.

  7. I think this bag is great!! if you actually bother to look at the designer, beatrice boyle, you will see that she does not paint vampires or zombies!! it is a juxtaposition between the dark side of fashion and the beautiful. This shows the flair for new designers and the replationship between art and fashion. i think you have to have a certain style for this bag.which my dear, you do not have. Understand the concept before you slate other peoples work.

  8. I agree with ^keeley. I think this bag deserves more background information. I personally do not like this bag but admire the artwork. It’s by Beatrice Boyle who is known for contradicting elements in her work (hence the running mascara on a girl eating ice cream – google!) and her graphic shirt/dress prints have been picked up by Browns, Intermix and among other places. While it may look lost on such a simple tote bag, the prints are nice on clothes. I think they should have sticked to that.

While BagSnob has always maintained that it’s their blog and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, they should do the same with this post. Not everyone will agree that it’s distasteful (I agree) nor that the face is dreadful (totally disagree) as mentioned. And for some, this artwork, while it won’t make you feel jubilant, is actually inspiring. I do feel like the whole idea was just shut down as it was unfamiliar and different.

  10. For a site called “Bagsnob” I think the point is being missed. Beatrice Boyle is a totally hot artist whose work has been picked by the uber-cool Browns to be showcased on clothing and bags. This bag is for people who want to say “I am cool” not “I want a pretty pink plastic quilted bag that costs $15”. Even if you didn’t like it a true “bag snob” would buy it just for this reason.

That aside I think it rocks, it is not afraid to make a statement and be different. It represents the sadness of beauty and as Keeley says is nothing to do with vampires. I have one of her dresses and it always provokes a conversation. This bag is not for those who want to settle for being ordinary. But I guess only a few can really carry this sort of thing off.
