Louis Vuitton Underground Messenger & Foxtail

If Marc Jacobs has it his way, furry foxtails will be this season’s equivalent to Miuccia Prada’s robots. Certain A-list models and celebrities have already been spotted sporting the latest “It” accessory attached to their Louis Vuitton spring runway bags, and I say go for it–if you’ve got the cash to spare. Vuitton’s spring runway pieces are mostly messenger-style bags, one of which is seen here on the gorgeous Elle Macpherson, but what I find funny is that given the propensity of wearers to sling these bags across their bodies, they end up looking like they have “bushy tails” thanks to where the bag ends up resting (right on the bum). I recently previewed these pieces at a private trunk show and while I did warm up to them more than I initially did when in Paris at the show, I’m not one to leave myself vulnerable to fashion ridicule (translation: I won’t be adopting this trend). I do, however, applaud the folks at Vuitton for making the foxtails–and the assorted other available accoutrement–both optional and detachable. Talk about versatility right? Not only will forgoing a foxtail more than make up for the tax on one of these four-figure carryalls, but should you get a foxtail, it can double as a keychain, a rearview mirror charm or even a duster for that fancy housewife out there.

  1. I was wondering how much those ridiculous foxtails were going to cost and now I know. I personally think some of those messengers on the women’s runway are HUGE enough to be used by guys. Especially the Bohemian in blue ($2410) or the Sunburst GM ($3230). They are big enough to be carry-alls, gym bags, or weekend bags. On a side note, why do usually stylish women wear boots like that? do they think they are attractive?

  2. Ick! I’m not opposed to fur, but there is something really grotesque about these fox tails. They remind me of those cheesy rabbit’s foot keychains— straight out of the mall. Maybe it’s the bright colors? Secondly, I can totally see that tail getting caught in all kinds of doors… it seems comical and not in a good way. Even if I had the money, I’d pass this up. For over $1000 you could get a really nice bag!

  3. Awful all the way around. I don’t own a single LV bag and never will. The fox tail just adds insult to injury on another horrible monogrammed bag. I would venture to say that the fox would much rather have kept his tail on his rear than have it dangling from ours…

  4. Jim, your “bushy tails” comment is hysterical! While I can’t fathom this trend, I love your writing and sense of humor!! Ping

  5. Those are the most ridiculous and disgusting things I’ve seen since my brother owned a Daniel Boone-esque ‘coon skin cap when we were kids!!!!! Just another reason why I would NEVER own a MJ or LV piece of merchandise….ever! So what happened to the rest of the fox? Just sad!

  6. I don’t like it. It is not a cute trend. LV needs to come up with something better! I’d look like a fool to waste perfectly good money on some animal’s tail to go on my handbag when I can spend that 1100.00 on a perfectly nice and high end bag! Marc Jacobs is crazy in his head!

  7. Um, no. Marc Jacobs is just messing with us. Catherine is right, these look like mutant lucky rabbit’s feet…maybe to go with the recently popular bunny ears?

  8. The foxtails are so bad, on so many levels. Very bad idea. The bag could be a very practical choice for some that can afford a LV bag. Their leather classic bags are a better investment and will stand the test of time.

  9. Typically overrated Marc Jacobs yet again. There are designers and there are designers. Those, like YSL, are revered for their innovations and those like Marc Jacobs will be remembered for their vulgarity and idiocy.

I don’t care if Elle or Jesus is wearing this. It’s grotesque. For once, I hope for PETA activists to get their red spraycans out.

  10. I thought EXACTLY the same thing when I saw the photo of this bag. I remembered those horrible neon colored rabbit foot keychains from my childhood, which I later realized were created because the rabbit had lost his needed foot. I hate the idea that a beautiful fox was slaughtered so that some ridiculous person could wear his now neon colored tail. I would however gladly pay $1200 to have helped in the cause to protect these animals…Louis Vuitton may find that they have lost customers due to their horrible offering…Won’t buy their tails or now even their bags!!

  12. I hope Marc used faux fur for these “foxtails” or what’s next? Bunny paws? Cow’s ears?

    How about human fingers?

  13. Sorry but they are repulsive whats the purpose?? and for that amount of money who in there right mind would even consider buying one , sorry no go for me

  14. I like the look; it’s fun and playful and it adds some color to a drab outfit. I have no problem with it whatsoever, and I like fur.

  15. Fur is atrocious enough on it’s own, but the fact that it doesn’t serve any purpose (i.e. the “it keeps me warm” argument) is the icing on the cake. I can’t stand that these industry leaders don’t use their power and influence to do any good for the world.

  16. Fur tails are certainly coming back in style, though I have to say that these pictured above are simply horrid. The neon color isn’t visually-appealing at all, and you can certainly bet these came from cruel overseas fur farms. I won’t even START on the insane price-tag!

If you enjoy the look of fur tails, but prefer something a little more natural and far more eco-friendly, you might be interested in fur tails from NaturePunk on etsy.

All my tails come from one of two places: The American Fish and Game Department (who collect them from roadkill or confiscate them from hunters without liscences). Or are recycled from antique/vintage fur stoles.

Unlike those from LV or even Chubbyboob, none of mine EVER exceed the $60.00 price mark, and aren’t colored artificially. I even take custom orders to add charms for extra flare.

    Check it out!

  17. Look people. There’s nothing wrong with wearing fur. I used to be like you people. I THOUGHT IT WAS SO WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS! But a year ago I went on a trip to Alaska and I learned a lot.

Did you know that when they kill these animals the meat is left behind alowing other starving animals with little food source to stay alive longer? Did you know that ALL OF YOU have ancestors who wore furs and if you hate the idea you obviously don’t honor nor respect your ancestors? Did you know that if if your respect and honor the dead animals soul there’s nothing wrong with wearing it? Did you know that PETA sometimes dumps paint on peoples furs completely disrespecting the fallen creature (who’s the bad guy now) and making it’s death meaningless? Did you know that foxes are NOT on the endangered species list? Did you know that you hating someone for wearng fur makes you a replica of your ancestors who murdered the Native Americans? Did you know that some people are allergic to faux fur? Did you know in places like the Nordic countries, Great Britain, and Russia need furs to flee from the cold?

    My oppinion on these tails:

THEY ARE SUPER KAWAII!!! I LOVE THEM! I just bought a 22″ long REAL ONE OF A KIND NATURAL RED FOX TAIL!

I honestly am not a fan of dyed furs but they are EXTREMELY KAWAII. You can buy real natural fox tails on ebay for $10-$30 and you can buy a tassle or bag anywhere.

  18. Kitsu, you have some really warped ideas. My ancestors may have worn fur because that was what was available at that time, but it is not the case now. I have nothing but respect for Native Americans or other aboriginal people, but that is another matter as they have culturally spiritual ties to animals. The rest of us – no. Long gone. It sounds like you were sold a bill of goods by someone trying to get into your pocket book! By the way, if you are going to waer the fur then enjoy the next fox roast you eat! :o/

  19. Fur will always attract a lot of emotional comment…

I really an not pro or against fur in general…

What people should remember yes there are horror stories that people love to highlight, we all know the Asian problem with Animal Rights, There are many managed fur farms in Europe and the US that are controlled managed and have strict management principals. I don’t condone trapping and poor care practices but if fur is correctly farmed as with all animal farming then its up to peoples personal choice.

  20. I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT! it’s so stupid how people think fur and leather are “so stylish” and blah-blah-blah. IT’S NOT! gosh darn it. animals have feelings too, and i think it’s time people realize it! if anyone buys this, you’re stupid, i swear, you have no heart. some people just don’t have hearts now-a-days…it’s just so sad. how would you like it if i came over to your house, skinned your family alive, and then skinned you ALIVE! this is how they treat anumals. if you know this now and you still keep it up, i hope you die the way these foxes did to make your stupid purse and/or foxtail chain, (not to be mean) how can anyone let this happen, ESPECIALLY designers. grrr! i’m serious! it just makes me so angry, and i’m not an angry kid, I swear I’m not.

please just think about it people…please!! ‘~’

  22. did you know i don’t like you? i should skin you alive so i can feed your meat to starving animals and people, instead of giving them good food and having you as an extra person to help out this crazy, mixed-up world we’re living in. i honor my ancestors, but we don’t live in that time anymore, we don’t need to kill, i mean murder animals to cloth ourselves and feed ourselves and others now-a-days. we have evolved, if we were living back in that time, we wouldn’t have thought about it much, but we know how it feels to be them, we have grown, not weak, but stronger, more capable to understand. anyways, wearing fur doesn’t make the animal’s death meaningful at all! how would you like it if i went around wearing your dead grandma’s skin as a coat or a dead pet of your’s fur or whatever, even now-and-again, hurts don’t it? it doesn’t matter if they are extinct or not, all animals have feelings. and for people allergic to faux fur, get over it. just don’t buy fur. and i don’t care how cold it is wherever, that is no exception to kill (murder) poor, defenseless animals. try killing your pet for it’s soft, warm fur, you wouldn’t be able to do it i bet. not unless you were completely dying, which i doubt anyone is during this time of global warming. try killing your mother because you are hungry, we got enough food, you don’t need to kill your mom, or animals. make a fire for God’s sake, plant a garden. i have more to say, but i will stop now, so goodbye.

  23. Reality is foxes as much as I love them are still considered pests in all parts of the world or chicken theives so unless they are placed on an endangered species list their pelts will still end up in fashion or on people. You want to save animals then FOCUS your attentions towards your own cars emmisions or those who only wear cotton? How about the millions of gallons of toxic dyes dumped world wide by cotton factories into rivers and the environment killing thousands of species now and humans on the long run.Or HOME CONSTRUCTION companies that displace so many animals by building more and more homes each year into their natural habitats. Get your red paint spray cans and spray your self in the face or jump off a bridge since your mere existance kills animals daily. Wake Up!! Also Marc Jacobs loosing fashionistas over this is ridiculous it’s like saying Madonna will loose fans for showing her boobs maybe when shes 80 but no time soon as both are far too idolized at this point. In retropect focus your energies on the bigger issues than trivial BS perhaps your too lazy to take on the real issues.

  25. I agree with Andrea Rocha. and to Michael G.. since you know so much about greenhouse gas emissions and all that jazz why are you being such a naughty citizen to Mother Earth? Also, it doesn’t matter if there are a lot of fox in the world. Why are we even killing them off. Just because there are a lot of Chinese people on this planet doesn’t mean we should kill some of them off. I just think it’s ridiculous to value the fashion industry so much. Why do people value all this superficial bullshit like thousand dollar bags. I just don’t understand. Why don’t we just buy what we need at a REASONABLE amount. why waste your money on that kind of shit when you could be doing something charitable with it. We are so consumed with this kind of nonsense. If you think about it we live in this endless universe on a speck of a planet and we’re just here consumed with our superficial problems with this kind of bullshit. Anyways I just dislike these fox tails not only because it’s made of an animal but because they look ridiculous and the fact that high end designers are using them in their collection makes me think the world has truly come to an end. Hopefully soon.
