“Africa meets Scotland, folk meets punk.” For fall, the Missoni woman travelled far and wide, drawing rich inspiration from African Masai warriors and Scottish folk looks for knits that are all about primitive layers. While the look was rustic winter tribal, the shapes were simple: square and triangle bases that wrap easily around the body. Essential Missoni fall pieces are the cape and skirt–essentially a twofer piece depending on how it’s worn–that were shown asymmetrically draped and wrapped. Patchwork skirts worked well with thick pullovers and tweedy shorts. A strong outerwear focus prevailed in the form of blanket coats, ponchos and capes, a knitted A-line parka, kimono robes, sleeveless handkerchief-point jackets and hooded cropped cardigans. Rustic earthy tones of brick red, fired earth, wood brown, heathered grey, leaf green and oatmeal neutrals enveloped ballerina-length circle skirts, kilt-like wraps, super wide shorts, patchwork dresses all layered with bras and lingerie bandeaux. A particularly strong color combination was the juxtaposition of turquoise and tan.

Being a house built on its signature zigzag knits, textiles were of utmost importance. Patchwork knits, tattered crochet, pieced furs, plaids and tartans, black-and-white Aztec diamond patterns and space-dyed zigzags complemented such intrinsic detail elements as horn toggle fastenings, patchwork bead embroideries, ribbed welts, zips and fur-trimmed hoods, while footwear came in the form of high-heeled knitted booties with silver spurs. Particularly strong were the ribbed knit collars and chokers featuring zips and rings and across-body bags in patchwork knits.
