Guests at Monday night’s Met Costume Institute Gala–the Oscars of the East Coast, as it’s become known as–went either one of two ways when it came to dressing the part: be patriotic (in keeping with the event’s “American Woman” theme) or promote international relations. Diane von Furstenberg, for one, was about pure nationalism.

“Honey, I’m the Statue of Liberty,” she declared of her DvF frock, covered in oversized stars. She wasn’t the only one feeling the American spirit that night, although I do wish Jon Bon Jovi had been on the red carpet to perform a set during arrivals. Taylor Swift and Jessica Biel donned Ralph Lauren Collection, Justin Timberlake wore custom William Rast, Brooke Shields and Diane Lane chose Michael Kors, Mamie Gummer and Karlie Kloss stunned in Donna Karan Collection and co-hostess of the festivities Oprah Winfrey wore a custom Oscar de la Renta gown that took four people 250 hours to make! But leave it to Marc Jacobs to trump them all–albeit in an unusual way. Walking the red carpet in a plain old baseball cap, he smirked when asked about his sartorial choice. “I had hair transplants,” he said, divulging not much more. Meanwhile, football greats Eli Manning–a guest of Tory Burch–and Tom Brady–a guest of Anna Wintour along with Gisele Bundchen helped each other through the red carpet pandemonium.

Some Americans did choose to represent the international jet set, however (though they were allies). Kristen Stewart donned Chanel Haute Couture; January Jones in YSL and Anne Hathaway and Kate Bosworth, both in Valentino. Then there was Katy Perry, who flew the flag for American uniqueness but donned a British design. Her eccentric design–which featured strategically placed lightbulbs that had their own on/off switch–had lights that flashed all night, which certainly bode well should there have been a black-out. And given the recent bomb scare in Times Square, it couldn’t have been more apropos. “I do feel like a terrorist wearing all these batteries,” she whispered.
