Fendi Skin Bag and Skin Bag Cover

fendi_skinbag.jpgfendi_skinbagcover.jpg

There is a designer at Fendi that is a some kind of type-A engineer coming up with bags that are more complicated than I can comprehend. This Skin Bag comes “naked”, in either this dark brown or a super bright yellow. The handle is ash wood and plexi with a kiss lock closure. You then MUST buy a Skin Cover. There are 3 designs, the one you see here – in a tan mesh with white details and brass chain link trim, a grey linen with flower details or a plain golden mustard linen. You are not allowed to buy the bag without a skin. Although, if you buy it on the web, they can’t really stop you. The spikes on the bag are made for the skin cover to fit over it. This all seems ok until I find out that once you commit to the skin, they are not interchangeable. What? Why? I don’t know. All of this info is so oddly fascinating and ridiculous yet it is the only reason this bag is even interesting to me. I guess it’s meant for customization but requires way less creativity than their DIY projects. The Skin Clutch is $1620 and the Skin Cover is $615.

  1. I don’t get it…why would anyone want to put a “skin” on their bag?…what’s the point of the original bag’s design?? Maybe people can stick their laptops in mesh skin..

  2. Kelly-even after reading your detailed commentary on this 3 times, I still don’t get it! Can’t imagine they will sell many, if not any, of these.

  3. What’s the point in making these “skins” if you can’t change them out. Fendi, that’s just bad business. And I’m not even in business.

  4. Okay, so you choose a bag then a skin. How do you know if you like the skin with a particular bag if you can’t change it out?

I don’t get it. If the handbag is going to be that complicated, then I don’t need. Life is complicated enough.

  5. They are similar to the bags we had when I was in high school. I still have it, as a matter of fact. They had different “skins/covers” that allowed you to carry the bag with different looks. Kinda neat, but too expensive for my wallet.

  6. I’m confused, so you can’t buy all three skins to interchange? How can they stop you once you take it home? Oh, so you can’t buy a skin without buy a bag, I still don’t get this. Ridiculous.

  7. I was so confused, I called Fendi directly to get this info. Barney’s did not have enough info for me. The Sales Associate was very explicit, you cannot interchange the skins. And you cannot buy a bag without also buying a skin. All of the points brought up here are completely valid. And I don’t have answers to any of them.

    Love, Kelly

  8. I like the concept of putting up a skin for a more personalized-look in this bag. However I really don’t get the point of why they are not interchangeable. It simply defeats the main purpose.

  9. Ok, this is like an evil bermuda bag from back in the day. I still have my original bermuda bag & even upgraded it Love the versatility of it especially in the summer! However, what is the point of this bag? This bag is just – WHY?? For the amount of money it is ridiculous & not really an attractive bag at all.
