Bag Snob on Thursday was among the first to preview the latest incarnation in Cartier’s lineup of successful bags under the Marcello moniker and the luxe French house, known the world over for its watches and jewelry, has got a hit on its hands. As I’ve said before, long-strapped bags are all the rage for spring; at Cartier, chief handbag designer Marlin Yuson reinterpreted the brand’s iconic Marcello tote into a hands-free leather-and-watersnake version (available in three sizes) that has appeal whether you’re an Upper East Side mom or a Bohemian living in the West Village. Debuting in June at Cartier boutiques worldwide (the same time Cartier will also launch an iPhone case-it’s out in June and the item is officially known as the “Cartier Collection les must mobile digital device case compatible with the iPhone”), it’s a fabulous day bag–perfect for work or school–that transitions well into night (at least with the smallest size). What’s more, each bag comes with a matching shorter strap that allows a seamless conversion from over the shoulder to under the arm in no time flat.

Inside, the attention to detail is impeccable. An inner magnetic flap keep valuables secure in the small and medium versions, while the large size boasts a full zipper closure across the top that’s roomy enough to accommodate a slim laptop. A back magnetic closure affords another roomy pocket for convenient access. Perhaps what I appreciate most is the Cartier “CC” logo discreetly etched on inside flap (there’s nothing that screams Cartier on this bag). Produced and manufactured in Florence, Italy, the saddle bag features one inner pocket with Cartier double “CC” logo closure while rounded metal strap bases lend a modern, polished finish. In rich colors like dark caramel, ebony suede and cherry red, the top-stitched corners are reminiscent of the original Marcello. For those who want an exotic piece–crocodile and python are among the options–a made-to-measure service will be available.
