While he may be best known for re-fashioning ceramic shards into everything from fire extinguishers to Mao jackets, it was Li Xiaofeng’s art of creating handcrafted “clothes” that inspired Lacoste to enlist the Chinese artist to join a highly-selective group of collaborators in creating a limited edition polo. The latest designer in Lacoste’s Holiday Collector’s Series, Xiaofeng created a fragment-inspired polo (20,000 of which will be sold) and one very-expensive polo from the ceramic fragments themselves.
The uber-expensive porcelain polo was made by linking together 317 pieces, took three months to produce and makes it the most expensive (and exclusive) Lacoste shirt to date. The actual polo that will hit stores in October, by comparison, is a bargain! The printed polo was created from digital photographs of existing shards of fifteenth and sixteenth-century pieces from the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, covered with lotus and baby patterns.
