Horse+Nail Charlie Bag

horsenail_charliebag2.jpg

The name sounds strange until you see the bag and then it totally makes sense. Yes, this is in fact inspired by horse and nails. But the origin of the name comes from designer Lindsey Hufnagel’s last name, which in German means horse (Huf) and nail (nagel). So, was she bound to this look with such a name? I don’t know but I like it! The horsebit has been done to exhaustion (Gucci) but here there is a slight twist to it – it is the shoulder strap with some rocker like chains to make it edgy like a futuristic outlaw rather than hoity toity polo player. The super grainy textured leather in military green is the perfect canvas to bring this back into city life (saddle brown would take this straight to tumbleweed town). There is an detachable long shoulder strap to wear this cross body with the chains and horsebit hanging but that look is highly discouraged. At Shopbop for $1280.

  1. Not only is the bag hideous but is an atrocious wanna be copy of a Gucci Hobo. And the leather looks cheapy! Should be $12.80 at Forever 21!

  2. I am not really a fan of the military green, but otherwise I like the bag. “Huf” means hoof, though – “Pferd” means horse.

  3. Ewwwwwww! I own the horsebit hobo with the braided shoulder handle in gray and intend to keep it forever. This one is just hideous in every way!!! It looks painfully hideous!

  4. The bit and chain is actually a pelhem bit that is commonly used on polo ponies, or any horse that needs extra “brakes”.

It actually is much more of a reference to polo players than the Gucci bit which is a common snaffle used mainly on Hunters or pleasure horses.

  5. This bag looks awkward and I find it wrong for a boring/unoriginal bag like this to be charged over $1200 just because it has a chain on top that looks painful when you are carrying it. I have some classic hobo style bags that will outlast this piece.

  6. The “rocker” chain is part of the equestrian detailing. In the horse world it is called a “curb chain” and prevents the bit (in the case of the purse a snaffle bit; which does not require a “curb”) both from over-pressure in the mouth and adds a bit of its own pressure behind the lower jaw of the horse. Anyway, Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo got it right when they did horse detailing. This looks like a mess.
