Sunburn Remedies

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not a beach person, heck I’m not even a sun person! If you ever saw me Hamptons pool-side you’d probably think I was crazy because I’m so covered-up to protect my skin and hair from the sun (yes I fear the sun even when lathered in SPF 45-plus). Two weekends ago however I ventured out to an all-day, outdoor charity event wearing a romper. I rarely wear shorts because since I never let me skin get too much sun exposure, my legs are very pale and sun-sensitive. Throughout the event I was non-stop re-applying SPF on my face, arms, and chest, but I completely spaced on re-lathering my legs! The result? Let’s just say I’m lucky I didn’t get second degree burns. The days following the event I could barely walk, let alone get down a flight of stairs! I did by some miracle make it to Sephora and CVS however and amassed quite an arsenal of products. When my burn was so painful that I couldn’t even touch it, CVS Aloe Extra Instant Burn Relief ($6.99), was a life savor along with cold showers. My legs were so scorchingly hot, this really helped sooth and ease the burn. Apply 3-4 times a day.

After two days, my legs still looked lobster-esque, but the burning sensation subsided a bit and I was actually able to touch my skin without feeling the urge to scream. Jump for a run-down of the three products I found to be most useful.

June Jacobs After Sun Hydrador ($36) – my mom bought a bunch of June Jacobs products awhile ago after getting a massage at, I believe the Mandarin Oriental, where they use the line. The cream is relatively fast aborning, has only a light scent, and is incredibly moisturizing.

If you prefer the cooling sensation of a gel, Liz Earle’s Sun Shade Botanical Aftersun Gel ($25) is equally soothing and moisturizing. Highly recommend both of these to not only relive pain, but prevent a horrendous peeling mess!

You can use both of the aforementioned products on your face, but if you’re worried about peeling or want something extra soothing for your face, Sensai’s Soothing After Sun Mask ($100 for 8) are simply fabulous. They are dripping in product (seriously I think one mask has a whole bottle of Sensai product on it!), making them ideal for a quick, easy at-home facial.

Lastly, I bought Murad’s Soothing Gel Cleanser for Redness ($25) which feels nice on skin and will also work with your Clarisonic. If your skin isn’t in too much pain I would use the Clarisonic and this cleanser anywhere you’re burned it will help with peeling.

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. White vinegar eases the pain of sunburn, it has anti-inflammatory properties. No need to buy these expensive creams that don’t do much.
