An Oscar de la Renta bride shies away from ostentatious glamour. She’s the type of lady who takes tea at The Carlyle, can distinguish between togo and clemence leathers and knows her way around Bergdorf’s blindfolded. At an intimate, one-on-one showing of his spring bridal gowns, it was clear that de la Renta doesn’t want his bride to make a statement as much as he wants her to leave a lasting impression. Twelve new silhouettes were shown for spring, ranging from the short and sweet (a ruched silk taffeta dropped waist cocktail dress with two-tiered skirt) to the show stopping (a petal faille gown with white ruched tulle overlay). It was the latter that hinted at de la Renta’s former work at Balenciaga; the ode to the late Cristóbal was undeniable. But in between the two extremes were a plethora of simply gorgeous gowns that any bride worth her rhinestone-buckle Manolos would kill to wear on her big day. The celebrity-inspired bride will be happy to know that “Glee” star Lea Michele’s navy Oscar dress has been remade in white, while a spring ready-to-wear runway dress with ivory swansdown skirt has been reincarnated with a baby blue bodice. Ladies, Oscar’s got your gown covered. The rest is up to you.
