Health Benefits of Red Rooibos Tea

A few weeks ago I blogged about how I’m slowly transitioning from coffee to tea and one of my latest discoveries is Rooibos (also known as Red Tea). It’s great for your skin, it’s full of antioxidants, and some studies have shown that it can help ease irritability, headaches, tension, insomnia, stomach cramps, and redness. Red tea is also caffeine-free, so it’s great after dinner and for pregnant or nursing women. Further, though they’re not present in huge quantities, the tea has a number of minerals including iron, calcium, fluoride, and potassium, which explain the skin benefits that you might notice if you start drinking Rooibos. Regardless of any potential benefits however, I’m loving the taste (and color!), of red tea. There’s something calming about finishing a day with a cup of tea (I like a squeeze of lemon in mine to help with digestion). Some of the best red teas I’ve tried are from Numi’s (Fair Trade, organic, they use 100% real ingredients, no artificial oils or flavorings), Republic of Tea (have written about their great teas before), and Talbott Teas (recently named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things! Check-out their gift sets too…their tea bags are gorgeous).

Have you tried Rooibos before? What’s your favorite tea?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. I drink all kinds of tea, including Rooiboos. I recommend Numi teas because the ingredients are of high quality and taste wonderful. I have been making samplers of the ones I ordered online and passing them out to friend and coworkers. My favorite is the Decaf Black Vanilla Indian Night: http://www.numitea.com/Decaf-Black-Vanilla–Indian-Night/p/NUMI-10270&c=NumiTea@Teabag@Black – even without caffeine, it gives me a lift. My second favorite is Chamomile Lemon Sweet Meadows: http://www.numitea.com/Chamomile-Lemon–Sweet-Meadows/p/NUMI-10150&c=NumiTea@Teabag@Herbal – very calming and fragrant. Neither of these is available in Honolulu except as part of an assortment. They should be, because my friends and coworkers will be looking for them!

  2. A little update on this…just found out that the Plaza now carries a skincare line called Goldfaden based on red tea!

  3. I discover so many amazing things at Whole Foods:) Only wish they had a better raw food section, but they do have some amazing teas. Def try this! Few things are delicious, guilt-free, and good for your skin when it comes to foods/beverages!
