Phoebe Philo continues to dazzle with her reign at Céline. For pre-fall, Philo upped the ante on her exquisite masculine tailoring, reinventing fur-lined coats, thick-knit sweaters and sleek trousers as inspired by boys and girls of the 1950s British underground scene. The collection was calm, cool and 100% covetable. But are we really surprised? The metallic cigarette pants were one of few feminine hints in the collection, although the patchwork color-blocking was a beautiful indication. As for those knits? Boy, were they fabulous. Tartan. Cable-knit. Tweed. Houndstooth done up as a print on a silk blouse? Divine. One of my favorite pieces: an ivory cable-knit sweater with asymmetrical hem that tickled with a shock of bright white at the end of the sleeves.
