Edmundo Castillo Fall 2011

You can always count on Edmundo Castillo to march to the beat of his own drum. For fall, the former creative head at Sergio Rossi, who put his eponymous label on the backburner but has since relinquished his title and is back on his own, sought untraditional shapes and silhouettes but paired them with traditional fall colors–with a twist. For example, classic bottle green was infused with hints of blue; camels boast an infusion of orange and reds are coupled with brown. “It’s a touch of a twist so they look fresher and work with neutral tones,” said Edmundo. For fall he delved into the desert motifs and those of modern California architectural lines. “It’s the spirit of [the self expressionist-promoting] Burning Man with the technology,” he added. Take, for example, the combat boot. Traditional in shape and utility, but cast in a rich velvet texture, it suddenly becomes feminine and ready to be paired with a ball gown. The idea was not to have something too precious or too practical. Pony, antelope and leather represented the lion’s share of the collection, but a chic metallic kangaroo skin (the skin pulls very flat and leaves no ripples or raised lines, Edmundo explained). “I wanted skins to be flat and have that modernity,” he said. “It’s about being light in more ways than one.”
