Miu Miu Fall 2011 Runway Bags: Through Miuccia’s Funhouse Mirror

Prada’s little sister line revealed an almost cartoonish, though clever play, on masculinity and femininity for their fall collection. Masculine in the oversized shoulders and sharp collars, feminine in the flirty skirt lengths and more importantly, the bags. While the sizes deviated slightly and materials varied – mink, suede, leather, and satin – the ultimate shape was maintained: that of a giant change purse. It’s a twist in which the outcome is reminiscent of a little girl playing dress-up in her glamorous mother’s closet. Sure, it’s nice to have the room, but since there’s no handle to grip and rather voluminous, petite girls may look like they’re carrying their baby in a swaddle bag.

While exaggeration is appreciated in a fashion show, if it’s inconvenient – or not necessarily flattering – the piece will have problems being converted to real life. Which is why I much prefer the smaller, more compact versions shown, ones to make you feel like a lady and not a little girl.

  1. Nice hair throwback to the 40s. Not sure about the big poufy clutches though.

  2. Love the fifth and sixth clutch. I d like to see other colours.
