Marni Framed Leather Tote: Open It Up and Say “Ahh…”

Am I really this easy? I guess so, simple frame tote with contrasting straps is all it takes to unwind me! But lo and behold, here is a bag so precise in it’s simplicity, it’s distinct. And I couldn’t find it more rousing.

I am a Marni girl through and through but their last few seasons have left me lost while the house struggles to find its identity again. Marni’s few recent successes, like their reversible suede tote and bubble-covered black carryall (though I wouldn’t say they necessarily knocked me off my feet) prove what the brand is best at: simple quirks. Although there is nothing overtly quirky going on here – hear the words “plain leather,” “black straps,” “simple silver frame,” and nobody’s losing any sleep – there is that almost indescribable Marni touch at play. It’s that quality that takes something seemingly innocuous and before you know it, makes it burning-hot.

So what makes this a true Marni? It’s the slightly offbeat tone of olive leather (not tan, not taupe, nearly not anything!), the unapologetic contrasting straps with no segue (no lead-up, save the thinnest black felt trim at the sides), and the minimal frame with a stark slick clasp. And it’s like a breath of fresh air. On Net-a-Porter for $820.

Pair with: I would love to add some fierceness to my sense of comfort with Jil Sander’s ankle boots. An easy wedge is just my thing, while offbeat brass hardware picks up on the tote’s olive tone, and the cutout detail on the heel keeps things interesting. Jil Sander Leather Wedge Ankle Boots, $1,395.
