Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lip Color: Rule With a Velvet Mouth

First satin, now velvet. It’s the season for covering our bodies in the luxuriant fabric, so why shouldn’t our puckers get the same royal treatment? I’m a gloss girl myself, but I’m still intrigued by Chanel‘s latest addition to their tantalizing line.

They just released a range of eight new lip colors in a perfectly sumptuous texture. Matte lipstick looks so sophisticated – especially with a “done” face (read, evening attire), but the formulas tend to get really drying. When Chanel calls their formula velvet, they mean it; this has a chic flat texture that won’t budge or smear and it also doesn’t feel dry or cakey (at least compared to most lipsticks!). If you’re going to do lipstick, wear it all the way. Forget the pale beiges and pinks this time of year (although “La Distinguée” makes for a lovely rosy nude), and go for something deep and assertive. “La Somptueuse” is a rich brick-red as neutral as it is fierce, and wine-colored “La Sensualle” has a pink base and hint of vibrant plum, so it’s dramatic and approachable. At Bloomingdale’s for $32.
