Take Runway to Reality: Opposites Attract at Chanel

And don’t they always when it comes to finding the fine balance for making up our faces? A strong eye requires a light lip, and vice versa, unless you want to look like an eighties-era streetwalker or a little girl who got lost in her mommy’s vanity.

While the extreme raccoon eyes at the recent Chanel Prefall 2012 show were a little too, uh, Taylor Momsen for me (and the headdresses, though beautiful, all-out fantastical), if you tone down the way-too-intense eyes, this would be a lovely look anytime of year.

Here’s how to achieve a real-life interpretation of Chanel’s sex-kitten appeal.

1) A soft wash of bronzer: And I do mean soft. You’re going for a natural yet ethereal glow, not a Halloween mask. Ever-so-lightly dust Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Bronze on the areas of your face you want to highlight (cheeks, brown bone, etc.) and you’ll glimmer just right.
At Sephora for $39.

2) A nice, glowing cheek: Since you want the look to be sophisticated and not overly youthful, use a brush to carve out your cheek bones, focusing it on the hollow part of your cheeks. Lancôme’s latest La Roseraie Illuminating Powder looks as gorgeous in the compact as it does on your face.
At Nordstrom for $42.

3) A deep, smoky eye: The key is layering. Use an angled brush and a black powder eye shadow, like NARS’ Night Breed (it has very subtle sparkles for depth) to rim your eyelids and coat your lids. Then layer over it with a true liner for definition. Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Black Cream Eye Shadow is richly pigmented and easy to control.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow
At Sephora for $22.

4) A sweet, pink lip: Just a dab will do. You want a pout that looks naturally luscious and shiny, so no thick, matte lipstick here. In keeping with their Spring 2012 theme of softness and light, Lancôme’s L’Absolu Nu Lip Color is designed to enhance and replenish, without overwhelming your pucker. In Rose Candy, it’s perfectly sheer.
At Nordstrom for $29.
