Maison Martin Margiela Mesh and Perspex Boots: I Can See Clearly Now

Martin Margiela’s legacy of wacky otherworldliness continues, though there’s a fine line between eerily eccentric and just plain odd…and off-puttingly weird. A shoe made of see-through mesh with a Perspex heel – these are out there. But do you expect much less? If it were any other designer, we probably wouldn’t even give them the time of day.

The classic Margiela ankle-bootie shape makes these intriguing in an artsy way. However, it might be wise to stop at initial intrigue. You’d better have nice feet to pull these off; you’ll be flaunting them as people do double- and triple-takes. But in the end, even if you did just get a thorough spa pedicure, I’m not so sure it’s wanted attention you’ll attract. The effect of two types of clear – one like flesh-toned pantyhose, the other like a super-sized ice cube – sounds cooler than it actually is. Would you dare to bare your feet in these peep-show booties? On Net-a-Porterfor $1,095.
