Marc by Marc Jacobs Flipping Out Leather and Snake-Effect Tote: Flip-Flop

From Céline’s original Trapeze to Armani’s sleek riff to Givenchy’s slouchy version and back again: even though everyone is doing the trapezoid right now, I really like the shape of this Marc by Marc Jacobs tote. With the combination of an effortless foldover flap and a zipper closure (which is optional and you’ll only use if you need double-time security), it is highly functioning. I could see the Flipping Out bag as a reliable go-to treasure – if only I didn’t see that snake-effect panel! What can I say: it’s just really bad. I don’t mind faux, but this stuff is so plastic-y, it looks like linoleum flooring. Unfortunately, that’s all it takes to taint a good thing. We just went from chic to cheap. Marc, please flip this out again and just do old-fashioned contrasting panels. None of this pebbly imitation-snake stuff. On Net-a-Porter for $528.

  1. Looks like a Reed Krakoff! In fact, I thought it was at first. I’ve been a MJ fan for years, but lately, MJ’s been a little lazy with his bags – they’re either the same old styles with minor variations or they’re blatant rip-offs of other designers. This one is the latter. I’d rather pay2x as much for the Mini Atlantique rather than half the price for this cheap looking knock-off. C’mon Marc, I know you can do better than this!
