Top Foul-Weather Friends: Shelter From the Storm

Stella McCartney, Maison Martin Margiela, Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade All-Weather Bag

The harrowing winds of Hurricane Sandy recently ripped through the East Coast – and now a Nor’easter on top of it?! Mother Nature must be stark, raving mad about something this season, and there’s bad weather around the world to prove it. I have a feeling we’re going to be in for quite a winter, so I suggest preparing the best way I know how: by stocking up on the right bags. Here, the best bets to help you battle the elements in style:

1. Stella McCartney Faux Leather Messenger BagUsually, I’d elect real leather, but when sleet and snow hit, think three letters: PVC. Wipe, dry, and go back out!
At Neiman Marcus for $1,115.

2. Kate Spade New York Bon Patent Leather ShopperNothing says doom and gloom like days upon days of of dreary weather. Brighten them up with a perky tote designed to make you smile.
At Saks Fifth Avenue for $198.

3. Maison Martin Margiela Red Leather Stiff Collapsible BackpackWhat looks kooky at first proves reliable in a rainy jam. Collapse this down to portfolio-width and stick it under your raincoat when it starts pouring.
On Ssense for $2,075.

4. Louis Vuitton Eden MMDon’t get your knickers twisted over this: nothing repels rain and snow like LV’s monogrammed canvas. Do with that fact as you wish!
At Louis Vuitton for $2,840.

  1. I’m going to be nitpicky, and respectfully disagree with the LV recommendation – nobody takes Monogrammed Canvas out in the rain. The untreated leather trim will get water spots and damage. Only if it’s a few years old and has turned brown, but even then most stash it away for the LV treated leathers like Epi and Damier.
