Mugler’s statement-making cutout dress has been happily haunting my dreams for a while now, but at $4,112, I just can’t bring myself to buy it – even on sale, that’s exorbitant to say the least! Not anything else in the world will even come close to the geniusly-crafted sharp lines and structure of this avant-garde artwork, but there are more reasonably priced options available that are just as stylish. Kymerah’s stretch dress (on ShopBop for $126.60) has some similar skirt paneling, only in leather (not such a bad compromise), and with modern cap sleeves that’ll give you strong shoulders. Aidan Mattox’s version (at Bloomingdale’s for $180) offers up a sheer illusion neckline and a peplum as an alternative to Mugler’s unique detailing. And while Alex Wang’s black dress (at ShopBop for $402.50) may not have the fierce, futuristic structure I dreamed about, it does have a white contrast trim and an intriguingly draped back that’ll have people studying your outfit from out of the corner of their eyes.
