What a breath of fresh air! Narciso Rodriguez’s shows are always something of a relief, but for Fall 2013, he is better than ever. Lean, mean, and clean, clean, clean: Narciso shines brightest when he goes back to basics. So few can do what he does. Rodriguez doesn’t need all the bells and whistles; he barely needs accessories (but we will get to those shortly!). His finely tuned eye just requires fully realized, simplistic design.
Opening with a black bias-cut merino-wool top (along with sick ecru-and-midnight V-cut pumps!) let us know what we were in for, and it wasn’t muss or fuss. No high drama, and that is just fine with me; just beautifully cut clothes and chic day-to-night clutches to match. Graphic lines that play off a woman’s shape, but not in the typical body-conscious way. Narciso is far too modern for that. With injections of gleaming satin and netted-mesh and embroidery for texture, the master of colorblocking played off triangular panels in every incarnation. I’ll be craving tangerine pants of silk-charmeuse come fall, along with the pairing of the navy marine-wool jacket and cognac pants. From the laser-inlayed clutches (I’m obsessed!) to the smart bowler bags to the signature slipdresses, this is a totally classic, thoroughly timeless, honestly intelligent collection that is made to wear and built to last.
