Last night’s MET Gala was a punk rock star-studded event. From SJP flashing her lacy knickers and custom Louboutin thigh-highs in a wild Philip Treacy headdress to Madonna’s super short plaid Givenchy and playful black wig, the veterans showed the PYTs how it’s done. Not even Katy Perry’s religious-inspired Dolce & Gabanna gown (and crown!) held a candle to the original material girls. As per usual, I only had eyes for the bags. ‘90s ska queen Gwen Stefani had one of my favorites of the night. The off kilter geometric shape of her Ferragamo clutch (at Salvatore Ferragamo for $6,300) was just the thing to take the slate croc minaudière from simple couture to chaos.
Another favorite was Anne Hathaway’s Valentino Noir lucite bag. At first I was taken in by her hair (love the homage to David Bowie), but my eyes quickly fell to the rockstud beauty. Predictably, Christian Louboutin’s weaponized Marquise clutch made a couple of appearances. Miranda Kerr carried the silver (at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,995), while Jessica Alba revisited her Dark Angel past with black (at NET-A-PORTER for $1,295). Claire Danes rocked Oscar de la Renta’s black lizard Cara vanity case (at Oscar de la Renta $2,450), and of course Roger Vivier clutches were in everyone’s clutches – Kerry Washington‘s Frame Capiton (at Roger Vivier for $1,100) was my fave! One complaint? The lack of nose rings (thank god for Jessica Biel!). You’ll probably never see me write this again – there were too many diamonds last night. Where were all the studs?? You can’t just throw on a sexy dress and call yourself punk. The devil is in the details.
