We all know it’s really our world, but did you ever think you’d look at your husband’s, boyfriend’s, brother’s wardrobe for inspiration? Far beyond stealing his white dress shirt and making it your own or buying boyfriend jeans, menswear is gaining serious momentum. Showing months before, it’s only natural that men’s collections are setting the trends for womenswear. And men are seriously shopping. In China, nearly 55% of bag buyers are men (and they’re not just buying for the women in their lives, but for themselves, too). Merely briefcases, you say? Popular men’s bags run the gamut from portfolio styles to backpacks to totes and even fanny packs.
Look at Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2014 collection. It’s heavy on lush toffee leathers, preppy plaids, and dapper rockabilly-meets-Boy Scout style, but it’s even heavier on bags. If the longstanding French luggage house gets their way, men who regularly carry bags will be prevalent the world over (sans shame!). The Damier check, redux, took over the runway every which way: exaggerated, perforated, stamped, softened, and topped with drawstrings and thick straps.
I personally love the large totes featuring perforated checks. These are chic summer bags for men and women alike. Bucket and tote styles are a bit feminine – which is undoubtedly why I love them so much. But prissy? Not even close. Girls may be girls, but a hint of androgyny can yield lots of appeal.
