I never drink “fizzy” water. Flat and lukewarm is how I like it. I also steer clear of soft drinks and soda water (sparkling water is ok when served with vodka and that’s only because it’s fewer calories than tonic or Sprite!). They all leave you feeling bloated, which is neither comfortable nor chic. More importantly, many store-bought sodas are filled with chemicals and cavity/cancer inducing high-fructose corn syrup (if you have not yet heard, this is the most evil of all). They’re not good for adults, and certainly not for tots, who crave the sugary taste the most. My son and hubby love soda water, so I let them indulge here and there. At least it’s not a soft drink, right? In the past, I would buy Pellegrino and Perrier – they have less sodium than their American counterparts. The cost piles up, though, as do they environmentally unfriendly bottles and cans.
I recently purchased SodaStream’s at-home soda maker cuz it looked really fun. But then realized it’s the chicer, healthier and cheaper (in the long run anyway) way to drink sparkling water. I can control what goes in the drinks (my friends call me a control freak, I say I am caring). I only use two pumps of bubbles instead of three, and add healthy fruits like lemons, fresh crushed berries, and pineapples – experiment to find your favorite combinations. Make fizzy lemonade with lemons and organic honey! I let my son have a glass or two of the SodaStream once a week – he thinks it’s a treat and it solves the sodapop arguments. My husband loves it so much that he has one each night. If you’re a fan of sparkling water, the Pure model (on Fancy for $300) would be your best bet (it can also create soda, though, so all family members will be able to have their way). Those who prefer extra carbonation should opt for the Fizz (On Amazon for $259.95). No matter which of SodaStream’s models you choose, it’ll come with a carbonator, a BPA-free carbonating bottle (easy to fill and go but kind of scary as I keep thinking it’s going to explode), a sampler of SodaMix flavors, and peace of mind that you’re making a favorite indulgence as healthy as possible. Prices range from $99.95 to $300.
