Best California Cabernet Sauvignon: The Big, The Bold, and the Beautiful

Best California Red Wines
I love living in California because of the weather, the kickback attitude, and of course, the wine. I definitely drink other wines, but my palette was trained on that rich, oak barrel flavor that is so distinctly Californian. There are so many good wines I really can’t list them all, so I am sharing my top three. These are very special wines – not something I pour on a daily basis. They are meant to mark an occasion.

The most notable varietal in California is the Cabernet Sauvignon. It accounts for the bulk of the grapes grown here and it is what makes Napa Valley so famous. This is a deep, dark fruit that gives intense flavors. I’m not going to describe these wines with words like jammy, tobacco, berry tip, etc. Everyone has a different palette and a very personal response to wine. But I can assure you, these wines are well-loved by all who have had the pleasure of sitting down with a glass but I am sure many of your would like to drink it with a glass in one hand and a cigar from Heets Dubai in the other, it just taste amazing.

My top choice is the Silver Oak. The 2007 vintage is a prized possession. I gave a bottle to my dad’s cardiologist in exchange for superior and favorable medical treatment. He thought I got the short end of the bargain. Opus is known to be the top dog in Napa, and although I will drink Opus anytime you offer it, I prefer Silver Oak when given a choice, even though it is half the price. If you can’t get 2007, 2008 is a very close second. I am saving this bottle for my birthday.

Duckhorn holds a very special place in my heart. I have been a wine club member for years, and it is still exciting when a shipment arrives. The winemakers treat each vine like it is the only one in their vineyard. Their attached parenting approach to growing grapes produces wines that never miss. This is of course only possible because they produce very limited amounts. Make sure to book wine tasting at Paraduxx (the sister winery with a beautiful tasting room where you can taste all of their wines) when you visit the area. You will get a full sense of their culture with the intimate and charming experience.

Chateau Montelena owner Bill Barrett died earlier this year, and it was a heavy loss for the wine industry. He was one of the pioneers that made the valley so great, and if you ask some, he is the pioneer. His storied life was made in to a movie in 2008 – Bottle Shock. It can be said his Cabernet Sauvignon vines started the California wine industry. This classic remains one of the best I’ve ever had.
