Almond Milk: Why You Should Opt For It Over Soy and Regular Milk

Almond Milk

A lot of people are under the false impression that soy is great for the body – tofu! Soy milk! It’s all over aisles in health food stores, so it’s natural that many of us would think we are doing our bodies a favor by consuming it. Unfortunately over 90% of soy in the US is genetically modified (GMO), and more frighteningly, soy contains estrogen-like substances, and studies have shown that because of it people who regularly consume soy (two or more times a week), have an increased likelihood to suffer from irritability, mood swings, Alzheimer’s Disease, and cancer. For men in particular it can also contribute to hair loss and swollen prostates. My father has cereal morning and before bed every single day with soy milk, and my pleas to get him to stop have done nothing. I hope he will be the exception rather than the norm because the evidence against soy is becoming overwhelming.

Sadly the classic dairy milk we’ve long been told (thank you, lobbyists…) is great for our bodies is not much better. Not only does milk from dairy cows contain lactose and casein, both of which are often associated with gas and bloating, but a good chunk of dairy cows are injected with growth hormones to increase their milk production. Dairy milk is also slow to digest. Add to all of this the fact that dairy and soy milk are both relatively high in calories and sugar, and they’re just bad all around. So what’s the answer? Unsweetened almond milk!

Unsweetened almond milk has just 30 calories a serving and has NO sugar. Yes – it’s a bit flavorless (you can get vanilla and chocolate, which have the same nutrition facts as the original, though they don’t taste all that different), but if you’re just looking to moisten your cereal or use it in a recipe there really is no question that it’s the best option. Almond milk is also loaded in Calcium (more so than dairy), and since it’s made from almonds, it has most nutrients that can be found in almonds including protein, vitamin E, and magnesium. It also has no saturated fats. All in all, it’s not only better for your health, it’s also great for weight loss, and the vitamin E will help to keep your skin glowing!
