Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2014: Speed Racer

Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2014

Rodarte is getting a lot of attention today for their Star Wars-inspired collection, but when it comes to sources of inspiration, I’m more interested in Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier’s – Japanese anime speed racers.

For the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 show, models hit the track (sorry – runway!) in BMX boots and racing stripes. While the first look was basic black, it took no time at all for the pieces to transition into reds, metallic silvers, and a fair amount of playful prints. Ninja-printed jeans? Why not?! Looks were hybrids of samurai and motocross stars. A red cape, Obi belts, and kimono suits blended seamlessly with track-style dresses and culottes. The models sported sensible braids, some even half covering their faces in bandanas. Can we jump on that trend early? There’s a snowstorm hitting NYC, and it sounds cold!

This collection was not designed for the ultra-feminine (although, there were a few extra-large bows and layered ballerina skirts). It’s street wear to the extreme, characterized by chunky sneakers and colorful, knee-high socks. For me, best of all were the bags – gingham, striped, and solid satchels, messengers, and crossbodies for girls on-the-go. Their aesthetic is somewhat sportier than the line’s usual style, a departure welcomed by Marc. He brought Bartley and Hillier in to transform the brand, and transform it they did. The vibe of Marc by Marc is youthful, and though the duo didn’t stray too far from the demographic, they did create a collection chock-full of pieces that are sure to rev up the street style set in 3, 2, 1…
