Men’s vs. Women’s Hair: Is There A Difference?

Men's vs. Women's Hair

There’s nothing worse when reaching for your conditioner and realizing it’s empty because your roommate or significant other used the last drop without replacing it (except maybe reaching for those cookies you bought only to find an empty box because someone ate them without telling you…ugh!). With that in mind I asked Oscar Blandi stylist Taylor Fennema if men and women should, in fact, even be sharing hair products. Is all hair created equally? She tells us below!

Is there a difference between men’s and women’s hair?
The key difference between men and women’s hair would be the haircut. The haircut depends strongly on what kind of hair you have, whether it’s curly, straight, coarse, or fine. This is all very important when deciding on what haircut is best for you. Men typically have shorter hair while women tend to have longer hair which causes them both to style their hair differently using different products for the most part.

Are there some products that they should share? Meaning the products are good for both men and women to use?
It all really depends on the type of hair you have and the look you’re trying to achieve. For someone who has curly, more coarse hair and wants to tame it down, they would use a cream or oil. For someone who has finer, straight hair and just wants to give it more body and texture, you would use a pomade to give it that textured, fuller look. This mostly goes for men or for women who have shorter hair and are trying to accomplish a certain look.

That said, I would say there are some products out there that men are more likely to use based on the fragrance and what kind of hair they have. There are some product lines that are specifically geared towards guys like Crew. Crew is mostly known for its gel and pomade which are both very popular products. Men are more wash and go, so this is why these two products are used more by them.

Some other men’s hair products I would recommend would be Oscar Blandi’s Pronto Dry Sculpting Pomade to add texture to a styled look, Oscar Blandi’s Polish Glossing Creme to add shine and smoothness to the hair, and Crew for Men’s styling gel to slick unruly hair back and keep it in place or to define a natural wave or curl.
