Margaretha Bag from Escada

By Bag Snob in training, Anne- 22 years old

This special bag gets its name from the founder of Escada, Margaretha Lay, a tribute to her unique and lovely style. The moment I saw this bag I fell in love!! As I was walking around Escada, I came back to inspect the bag several times to make sure it wasn’t too good to be true. It’s everything you could ever want in an oversize tote, light, lovely, and perfectly frame fitting! The pattern of the bag, influenced by Moorish title motifs, is printed on cotton canvas and the rest of the bag is lamb Napa leather. A picture does not do this bag justice! One of the biggest problems for large bags and totes is that they are rather cumbersome to carry (think small handles and heavy bodies). The handles on the Margaretha are perfectly in proportion, dropping enough to comfortably sit on your shoulder without digging into your skin. This bag is sure to be a classic, sold exclusively at Escada boutiques for $1,750.

  1. Hi Anne, welcome to Bag Snob:)

I am 22 just like you, maybe that’s why this bag appeals to me also? I think I saw it in last month’s Vogue and at first didn’t know what to make of it,all I knew it was very unusual.I would have never guessed that the motif is printed on canvas,on photos it looks as if they put together little pieces of leather, very deceiving!

The colors are stunning and it would make a fantastic summer bag together with long, preferably white dress and loads of bangles!

    xoxo

  2. Hello!

I am not sure if this bag is sure to be a classic, but I do think it’s beautiful. The colors are stunning, but the motif presented seems a bit on the trendy side. Is this Escada’s attempt into the It-Bag game? If so, aren’t they a little late, as the bag bubble is starting to burst?

  3. I am not so many years older than Anne (well, not SO many), but apparently I represent a different generation as this bag does not appeal to me at all. Most importantly, I can´t see anything in this bag that would make it a classic.

  4. I just don’t see anything in it to make it a classic. Well, to me it is just an expensive version of woven, framed, Vera Bradley’ish tote.

  5. This is colorful and fun, certainly not classic to me. But perhaps to a 22 year old anything above Juicy Couture is classic?

  6. Hmm, I think it quite heinous, being a shade of vibrant purple and having funny, psychedelic designs… I personally don’t think will become a classic.

  7. I’m 21 and this bag does not appeal to me at all. Personally, I dislike the design and I really can’t see this bag ever becoming a classic.

  8. i’m all for the new artistic bags, but this one is ugly. i’d go for the prada fairy bag (if you can still get your hands on it). speaking of which, did anyone else catch the fact that it was on neimanmarcus.com for approximately 3 days. i wonder how many people snatched it up? clearly, it’s an it bag for this spring (and of course it was on bagsnob ages ago).

  9. Hi Anne,

I’m also 22 and I have to say that I adore your choice in a purse. Obviously there are more classic iconic bags out there but this bag has so much appeal. The colors (vibrant and out there), the textures (not safe but complimentary) and the overall appeal (who doesn’t love a huge bag to throw everything into). I completely approve of the newest bag snob!!! and i hope you make many more great choices to share.

  10. I’m a bit older than 22, unfortunately, but I think this bag is gorgeous, too.

The only things I would change, personally, would be to make it a bit less deep and structured and to give it a long shoulderstrap, so that I could wear it slouched low, just below the hips, with plenty of room left for a full-sleeved blouse, like the one shown. 🙂

I don’t think it’s a classic, as such, but then, almost nothing is and I would far rather spend my time enjoying beautiful bags, that I love, than worrying about whether boring-looking bags, I might otherwise buy, are classics, or not.

  11. yes! i fell in love with this bag the moment i saw it as well. i want it so bad! its gorgeous. not a classic bag though, but it is very unique. a definite statement piece.

  12. I am obsessing over this bag. This is the fist time I’ve felt like I need to have something. I’d agree it probably not a classic, but it’s fresh and exciting.
