Valentino’s Rose Garden: Snob or Slob?

valentinorosegarden.jpgSo this is what Valentino Garavani‘s been up to since retiring– tending to his rose garden!?!?  Either that or Alessandra Facchinetti was inspired by the floats of the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Califonia (the Rose Queen can carry this while cruising on her float!).  I can’t think of any other reasons for a flower tote made of multi-colored taffeta rosettes with burgundy patent trim(Kelly did an entry on this in black but the multi hued version is so pinata-clownish I could not resist!). Shoulder straps with rings. I can’t even look at this thing for too long because it is actually hypnotizing me.  Try staring at it yourself, you’ll find yourself in a hypnotic trance over the swirl upon swirl of hideousness.  $1,950 at Neiman Marcus but wait, it is on back order (do ya think it sold out at first shipment?) so you won’t be able to witness its loveliness in person until November.  What do you snobbers think?  Snob or Slob?

  1. Oh Please! It looks like a kiddie project with crepe paper roses. My granny would not even use these.

I love flowers but this is a major SLOB!

  2. I think it’s difficult to sell. What really justifies the price? The bag being made in Italy or the taffeta roses, that they paid someone a pittance to put together. It would be interesting to know how much a bag like this costs wholesale because the retail price is hilarious.

  3. I love this bag. HAHAHA. I was so happy to see it on bagsnob today. I have seen it in 3 different colors. The one pictured is definitely the most “bold” there is a pink hued one and a red hued one that are a bit more subtle (in addition to the black). I am the only woman in an office of men, last week I showed a few coworkers pictures of this and said, I want it. They were ALL against it. Seeing this bag in person changes everything, it is a beautiful work of craftsmanship. Now, lets get something clear, this is a “costume” bag analagous to the Chanel costume jewely fobs I wear only at the right time. This is not an everyday bag. This bag allows one to wear a well tailored, simple, outfit and make a bold statement. This is a piece for handbag collectors who are not looking for practicality.

    1. Jen, Sorry to necropost but not all woman could carry it off nor should they try. It would wear them. It isn’t just about being beautiful either, although that helps. It is about, style attitude and chic. I could rock that bag though and I am sure you did. 🙂

  4. I like it. It has a lovely shape, helping it to pull off the exuberance of the roses, and the burgandy trim really offsets it.

Okay, It kind of reminds me of cushion covers in my grandmather’s house, but… If I was wearing the boringest of outfits in black or grey, this would be just the piece to lift it from slob to snob.

I suppose it just depends upon the context in which it’s worn.

  5. A very charming interior design object, something I would place casually on a modern glass table-definitely not a bag for everyday use. The colors of the roses are beautiful.

  6. my friend has one in all pink rose bud and it’s a taller shape. it was really cute on her with jeans, heels and a nice clean white t. for sure it’s different and not your everyday bag.

  7. I’m not sure how I feel about this bag..

def would not carry it myself…colors are pretty though…to each his own I suppose!

    B..

  8. For $1,950 it’s hideous. But if I could pick it up at a garage sale for $10 or less I would love it for one of my mother’s dress-like-a-lunatic garden parties, or to take to the beach or a river trip.

  9. shaking head in disbelief. it’s just another example of a design house throwing stuff out there hoping we’ll buy.

  10. I agree on the points that it’s not an everyday bag, and whether it comes off as a snob depends on what it’s worn with. I find this too colorful and ornamental for my use, plus there’s a huge chance I won’t be taken seriously at work if I carry this bag.

  11. I love this Valentino Bag, I saw it at a Boutique in Providence (In the Bag) this past spring in all PINK. I love love love it.

  12. I can see this with an outfit of otherwise unrelieved black. Just the thing for those of us who like to stir the water. Not at this price, though.

  13. I don’t like this one with the multicolored roses, but I’m madly in love with the all pink one and I’m dying to have it [even though I don’t think anywhere is selling it anymore… which is very depressing]

  14. Is there anyone who has seen the Valentino “taupe” color buffalo historie handbag? This would be a gift for our daughter. I have the opportunity to buy the bag from Neiman Marcus on sale; however, I am not sure of the color. I have searched everywhere on line and can not find anything in this color. The store who has the handbag is approximately 5 states away, so traveling to the store is not an option. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated!

  15. This bag is absolutely beautiful… Tho I do always been in love with basic colour and bold colour but I am never into pastels. This bag will absolutely look amazing with jeans and white tee, or just a plain black tight turtle necks. Match it with really high red heels. It is sexy.

I don’t honestly think it comes off as hideous, any colours that comes out from this range of bag is beautifully bold and daring. Only those who can mix and match will think it’s nice opportunity to get a bag with many different colours to sizzle up.

It can be everyday bag too if you want it. I personally work with fashion magazines and designers, so we all come to work dolled and brightly couloured everyday. And we like flowers.

    1. I agree with you wholeheartedly. It is gorgeous beyond belief. I could have rocked that bag. It has such a great gypsy feel to it. I can totally see it with jeans and heels for a great everyday bag. I should go through this site looking for all the ”slob” bags and I would be sure to find what I love.

  16. Btw, in where I live they sell it for $2900. so $1950 is damn good, i’ll definately snatch it when I visit the states…
