Look Alike of the Week: Anne Klein vs. Jalda

Can you tell which bag is by Jalda?

Okay, there are times when designers are “inspired” by each other which is forgivable but when they blatantly knock off smaller designers without even trying to hide it– it’s just despicable. Look closely at the two bags above, they are from two very different companies. The original is Jalda, a bag designer we discovered a couple of years ago and featured on Bagsnob often (the designer even gave away bags on our site!) and the other is by Anne Klein.  Can you tell which is the original?  I certainly couldn’t!   I mean they are EXACTLY alike!  They could have changed up the handle or the shape of the foldover clutch, but no, that would actually be ‘work’.  It’s much easier to knock off a small independent designer because they probably won’t do anything about it, right?  Shame on Anne Klein!

  1. That’s just wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such BLATANT copying from one designer to the next. I don’t even like anne klein anyway, so good. But I do love Jalda’s bags!!!

  2. They sure do alike.A wild guess-the left one is Jalda??? We don´t have much of Anne Klein here, but the little I´ve seen of her clothes, well I don´t like them. I thought that the brand had ceased to exist?

  3. Ugh. As a makeup artist, this is akin to someone passing my work off as their own. Is there any way to protect against such blatant acts of thievery? Or do designers just suck it up and accept this behavior as part of the industry?

  4. The left (mannequin holding clutch) is Anne Klein..

The right (close up) is the original Bean Clutch Jalda designed years ago (and is her biggest hit!)

  5. I know that the one on the right is the original “Bean” by Jalda. If you look closely, or at least in terms of the photo you’ve provided Tina, it appears to me at least, that the leather is softer in its appearance. That would be enough to tell me which one is a better quality bag. I wonder how well the Anne Klein folds over in that regard? Stiff leather doesn’t fold as well as soft, supple leather like the original!

  6. Shame on them!

I cannot estimate leather quality from the photos, but one thing I noticed is that the left one has 4 tiny nails on the handle – which makes it look less seamless, and more cheap.

  7. I am a BIG fan of Jalda! She uses very high quality leathers and I agree with you – copying her work is absolutely despicable. She is a very nice person, too. We all need to support the smaller designers by purchasing their products. We will end up with a much better handbag!!!!
