Leapfrog TAG Reading System

leapfrog_tag.jpg

I just got this for my nearly 4 year old tot and I am kind of wishing I got this sooner because she is reading! Maybe she would be reading at 3 if I got it for her then! Well, this is the appropriate age when they begin to comprehend that letters spell out words. The TAG system is a genius invention. It uses technology but not in a mind numbing video game way, the pen is a reader and will read the page or say the specific word depending on whichever function is chosen. It gives her so much confidence because she feels like she is able to “read” by herself. Of course, her favorite feature are the games. Throughout the book she can choose the game button and it will test reading comprehension, there are multiple levels of difficulty so she can move up when she gets better. At the end of each book are pages with games that teach vocabulary and reading in a fun and intuitive way. The system will give a definition of an object, like “it is a long narrow boat that uses paddles”, and she is supposed to point to the picture of the canoe. Then it moves up in difficulty in which she will need to point to the actual word “canoe”. When she gets the wrong answer, the system is really supportive and does not say something like, “You’re wrong!” but instead will repeat the question again with encouragement. Many of our favorite books are available for the Tag system, like Olivia, Click Clack Moo, Dora, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Chicka Chika Boom Boom, The Cat in the Hat, etc. You can get a case to hold the books and pen reader for the car and travel. It comes in green or pink. At Amazon for $44.99. Books are around $13.99. You will need to connect the pen to your computer to download the software for each book but it is totally easy. You set up an account on Leap Frog and they keep track of everything.
