Just Cavalli Ruched Maxi Dress, $780; DVF Paden Maxi Dressicon, $265; Gap Empire-waist halter dress, $39.99

There is nothing more comfortable, stylish and easy to throw on than an LBD, as in Long Black Dress, for the summer. This can literally take you from the beach all the way to a black tie event- all it takes is a change of shoes from flip flops to stiletto sandals and pile on some bold jewelry. It is the absolute most perfect thing to bring on a vacation. I have 2 of the 3 here, I don’t see the point in spending $780 for the Just Cavalli Ruched Maxi Dress although of course it is really nicely made but the nice fabric is also heavier so it kind of takes away from the ease factor. The Gap Empire-waist halter knit dress is what I throw on when I realize I have to meet someone in 10 minutes when I am still in my pajamas. Throw it on, add turquoise necklace, flats, and I’m out. I always get, “You look so nice” and all I can do is smile in satisfaction. The Diane von Furstenberg Paden Maxi Dressicon is different because it has the layers so looks more dressy. This is actually quite long so unless you are a size 2 and 6 feet tall, it will hit around the ankles. For my petite friends, you can tie a knot at the bottom for a super casual cool look when you’re wearing flats so you aren’t dragging the hem. But the length is your friend when you really do need to turn this into a cocktail dress.

  1. These seem like “BBD”s rather than “LBD”s to me. They’re pretty long.

Btw, who here has checked out Sunny Fong’s stuff? He won Prokect Runway Canada, and I think he’s probably the best designer on any incarnation of the show… His style also screams Couture Snob to me. Just curious.
