Bean Knock-Off?

BEAN earrings.jpg

I really like the Emilio Pucci Bean-shaped hard clutch (left, $1,385), but I can’t look at it without thinking that it’s a knock-off of Elsa Peretti’s bean. I know that similarities like this come up all the time — especially these days when it has almost become all too acceptable for designers to knock each other off — but Peretti’s bean is so iconic and so prevalent that Pucci’s bag almost strikes me as insulting, especially since it’s done in a high-shine metallic. That said the shape is great and given its curvatures it looks like it would be easy to carry despite its hard outer shell. I’m also loving the navy metallic color for fall.

What do you think about this Pucci clutch?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. Jaime is right complete and total knockoff ripoff (and its not like chanel invented quilting and chains but whenever a designer touches on that they are called out as chanel knockoffs)

  2. How can someone knock off a bean? It’s an organic shape that’s been around for millenia, not an invented, copyrighted design. And as far as beans go, they don’t look all that similar.

  3. Yea I agree the shapes are only simialr as far as they are bean shapes. But the bean shapes are still different. I mean the earings actually look like actual beans but the clutch is more like the shape of a baby in a womb kinda like the story about Kurt Cobain’s daughter Francis Bean. Love the clutch and love the earings, they are so cute x

  4. Elsa Peretti designed a bean handbag for Tiffany and Co. It is hard to get — the iconic bean shape, made out of sterling silver, absolutely stunning. You can still buy it, but it is very hard to find. This is a ripoff, and an awkward looking one at that.
