SJP’s Diane De Maria ‘Bonnie’ Bag: Snob or Slob?

sjp bonnie.JPGbonnie.jpg

I’ve seen the Diane De Maria ‘Bonnie’ Bag (in the U.S. Diane De Maria’s designs sell for around $1,800 at Outlet 7 in NYC, 646-602-2807), featured everywhere from Elle to In Style and now SJP has been spotted all about town wearing the bag. I don’t love the handbag, but if you’re looking for something more original than the LV Speedy this is a viable option. Diane De Maria is the granddaughter of Pierre De Maria and she uses her grandfather’s artwork as the springboard for the inspiration behind her bags (hence the lightly etched design on the doctor bag). The Bonnie comes in a variety of colors, though that bubble gum pink patent leather that Parker opted for is a bit much for anyone over the age of 10, especially when the real draw is the subtle artwork.

What do you think about the Bonnie? Snob or Slob?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. I like the bag SJP is carrying and think pink is a fabulous color for anytime of the year and for anyone that feels confident enough to carry it. I am over 40 and love pink and am proud to wear it, such a great pop of color during the dreary winter months. Get over the age sterotype!

  2. To Aadams: In Sharon’s defense, I don’t think she has a problem with pink as a color. I think it’s this particular shade of bubblegum pink that she was pointing out as being age specific and difficult to wear as an adult (and if you’re not SJP). Personally, I think that the majority of adult women wouldn’t carry a bubblegum pink bag on a regular basis (which I would assume that you would want to do if you’re going to drop $1,800 on a bag).

  3. Unfortunately, I think a problem is that Sharon does not know anywhere near, or have anywhere near the style, as Kelly and Tina. I wish they would stop outsourcing their blog!!

  4. I think we need to lay off Sharon. Yes, she does have some quirky ideas sometimes, but that aside, she consistently has the longest list of blog responses on this site – unless Tina and Kelley are featuring a Chanel or Hermes bag. And that fact in and of itself says that she is an important part of this blog.

  5. Thanks Camille! And yes Aadams pink is a great color in many cases I just don’t think this particular shade is very flattering. It comes off as kitschy and kitsch doesn’t suit this particular bag.

Rebecca Swinton your harsh comments are helping me develop quite the thick skin! I could easily write about all the fab Givenchy, Miu Miu, etc bags that I come across I’m just trying to give some variety and write about celeb bags, frugal bags, odd/kooky finds…all the bags I blog about are not bags that I’m dying to have or in some cases even like, just trying to show what’s out there and what some of the celebs we all follow are wearing.

  6. Just fyi, the longest response is mainly consist of readers’ negative responses to her post and/or her own comments on her own post, after posting something crappy, trying to defend or ‘add’ more info in the comment sections.

Seriously, look at that post, I got so confused… which bag does she want to talk about here? both? the pink? or the one thats in the big photo? what?? i think we need to ‘lay off’ Sharon too. Maybe we need to boycott her posts…

  7. How can you recommend that awful Lulu Guinness cat clutch yet say a simple, elegant bag in bubblegum pink “is a bit much for anyone over the age of 10?” It doesn’t make any sense to me.

  8. The point of the $300 Lulu bag is to be kitschy! For $1,800 and with a design by a very famous artist, I don’t think this handbag is meant to be kitschy…

  9. I agree with Sharon. The pink color is a little too precious for someone of legal drinking age…and yes, that includes SJP. Despite what Sex In The City’s publicist would have you believe, SJ is not infallible in her fashion picks. I like the black one. The etching on the bag is unique and looks pretty cool in the larger pics on De Maria’s website. Thanks for bringing us a something fresh to carry into 2010!

  10. Thanks for the interesting posts! I like a little variety in my life and it’s sad to see that so many people are scared of it 🙁 That being said, I would pick a LV Speedy (or 3 in this case) over one of these bags!

    Keep up the good work!!!

  11. In defense of Sharon, I think she adds freshness and creativity to the blog! Nice job Sharon and by the way the Diane De Maria bags are boring, pricey and awful! Such a pity that a Parisian well-off lady is abusing granpa’s fame and talent to create such horrible bags! This is a shame to the bag snob community!

  12. I miss Tina and Kelly and wish they would write more blogs. In terms of quality I find Sharon’s posts “boring” and not very insightful. I have started to skip over her posts and just because she gets comments and posts doesn’t mean it’s quality.

  13. I will defend you again Sharon-I’ve been dying to know who made SJP’s bag-I think the color, although a little harsh, is great and I think she can really pull it off- and Sharon, you are entitled to your own opinion about the bag and if you want to slag it off-please do. I don’t see anyone having problems with Kelly or Tina not liking stuff? If you don’t like something people say so but don’t be such hypocrites!

  14. Although I don’t necessarily find myself on the same wavelength with Sharon in terms of style, I do appreciate her presence on the blog. I think she adds flavor to Bag Snob and, let’s face it, none of her posts leaves people indifferent. Me may hate a certain item that she presents to us, but I think it’s still nice and valuable to see what crazy bags we can find out there. I’m 25, but I have more of a classic taste in bags, so Lulu Guiness style is not my cup of tea. I enjoy, however, reading about stuff like that, so keep up the good work, Sharon! I love the classy bags that Tina and Kelly feature, but I enjoy some funkier picks from Sharon too.

  15. Oh, and by the way – I love pink, but I don’t fancy this Diane de Maria bag in ANY color! I’d prefer an LV Speedy in a heartbeat!

  16. I like this bag in all color options! It’s different without being over the top. On another note, please leave Sharon alone…it’s so childish. Tina and Kelly, get back to the snob worthy bags that we all know and love from you.

  17. Well, I really like the bag (size, shape, etched pattern) and though the color may be a little on the young side, I think it’s fun and if you make as much money as I’m sure SJP makes, she can afford to have a fun, wild color bag that isn’t a primary day-time go-to bag. That said, being over 40 myself and working in male-dominated office, I just love to show up to work with something bright and bold. Sometimes I have to go a little over the top to stand out amongst the all those boys. So, if I had a spare $1800 laying around, I might just buy the bright pink Bonnie, then when I tired of it, I’d pass it to my young nieces for them to enjoy.

  18. I love this bag and I would totally wear it, but I change bags daily or every couple of days. I think SJP wears it perfectly and I love the color with the more conservative shape. That is what makes this bag so Awesome!

I also love Sharon’s posts. Even if I don’t agree with her she brings more variety to this blog.

What does bother me about this blog is the Coach giveaway. Coach has great marketing and some pretty bags, but they are so average to me and not “snobby” at all. When did Bagsnob start supporting Coach?

  19. IMHO- when I look at the 2 pics of SJP, I think the bag looks adorable in the casual shot, but is a total disaster in the dressy shot.

I am not a fan of pink for me in any case.

  20. The bag is available by special order only at Beyond7 Boutique for $1512. It is a limited edition and only 50 will be produced in the entire world. to order call (646)-619-6857.
