Bottega Veneta Cruise 2011

I always look forward to the cruise collections because I already know I’ll love what Bottega Veneta has to offer. Maybe it’s reflective of Tomas Maier’s laidback spirit and ease of hand when it comes to design, but I conjure up images of sailing on the Mediterranean listening to Dizzy Gillespie. For cruise, Maier brought to life his take on three characteristics: architectural, graphic and clean lines. I love the structured shapes of the sack dresses; their casually rumpled forms and unique thick bandage straps conjure up a strong, confident woman. According to Maier, the shapes are “a little Bauhaus, squared and then collapsing.” The collection is largely black and white–through and through chic and understated–but punctuated by colorful hues with some clear surf references. The statement-making colorblocked pieces, however, are reminiscent of scuba gear and have an athletic prowess to them.
