Alexander Wang Amber Spiral Notebook Clutch

YSL did this last year for half the price. I know Alexander Wang is the cool new designer but the thing that we love most about him is his fantastic price point. So not only is this a total YSL knockoff of a pretty distinctive design, but he took a $395 clutch and made it for $625. It is slightly bigger but it shouldn’t account for the huge price hike. And if you’re going to copy, at least improve, which he did not – it looks too much like an actual spiral notebook. Is it quirky? Yeah, I’ll give him that. And the mock croc? Ack. At Saks Fifth Avenue.

  1. I prefer the shape of the Alexander Wang but total copy and if YSL can make it for under 400 bucks then so too should Alexander Wang. (Love the Rocco BTW)

  2. It doesn’t look like he is even designing things himself anymore. Oh the perils of growing into a huge commercial brand and becoming a victim of your own success.

  3. ok ysl is my fav… and alexander wang is my #2… but eh…. this one falls short in general. the orig. idea is clever but meh… and i can’t stand mock croc

  4. Barneys also did this last season, Also arent Wang’s leather goods made in China?

If you look closely at any of Wang’s handbag designs you can see so much of other brands work. Chloe and LV in Brenda and Donna, YSL’s in the Darcy and Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton Speedy, Vivienne Westwoods Studded 85 Heels in the Coco. Maybe you should do a post about how unoriginal Wang is, and how far the hype machine has gotten him, along with a largely uninformed hipster customer who thinks he is the end all and be all, and who Im sure will love him and leave him as soon as another t-shirt designer pops up. Also I see so many of Marc Jacobs ideas and concepts in his work just reinterpreted. Merci.
