Whereas the Marc by Marc Jacobs resort ready-to-wear pieces were inspired by off-duty dancers, the accessories marched to a different beat altogether: endangered birds. Not only did the collection include one of the prettiest assortment of costume jewelry I have seen the brand produce in years, the handbags had a versatility that other brands only aspire to. Sure, you had your kitschy bird motif splashed across totes and umbrellas, but there was a surprisingly grown-up assortment of polished bags for day. The “Smith” bag ($358) with its top handle has a beautiful glossy leather finish with two expandable compartments lined in abstract pink fabric; a mini bag dubbed the “Perfect Purse” ($498) is made of patched leather and canvas with a weighty turnlock clasp; and the “Winnie” bag ($598) is sure to be a big seller. Its pyramid-textured leather and soft suede make this bag one of the more luxe offerings in the lineup. The heavy chain handle and long shoulder strap will afford its owner maximum wearability. Also of note: Jacobs’ new Day-Glo neoprene iPad cases.
