Furla Tate Shopper Bag

furla_tate_shopper_bag.jpg

A few months ago, when Furla hosted an evening of cocktails in Manhattan to preview four key fall handbag styles designed by newly-installed creative director Fabio Sasso, I was drawn to this bag. Known as the Tate shopper, it’s fashioned in quilted vintage leather with genuine astrakhan and shiny leather trim. It’s been awhile now since I’ve been impressed with a Furla bag design, but this one had me giving it a second look. Design wise, I was very impressed with how rich and luxe this bag looked in person. The leather is very supple, the bag is extremely roomy and the top unzips all the way to reveal an additional large pocket that goes all the way down the backside. It’s capacious without being too overtly utilitarian–and this bag has appeal for women of all ages. It’s both Greenwich and West Village at the same time! The top handle has a luggage-inspired look and in very soft to the touch. And can we talk about the price? When was the last time a quality handbag product that didn’t read “Made in China”–nevertheless one that marries leather with astrakhan and hardware–sell for under $1,000? I was very impressed by this bag–and hopefully, after checking it out for yourself, you will be too!

$895, available in August/September at Furla boutiques and furla.com

  1. I love this bag! Furla has always had great quality bags and made in Italy is icing on the cake! As for the made in Italy under $1000 dollar comment, I have seen many other Italian bags for less than $1000. I love the Henri Bendel bag line that I have started to collect, the majority of their bags are made in Italy in very limited quantities (or so the sales associate claimed!) and they are all about $700 or less. I would love to see one reviewed on here!

  2. The bag is gorgeous, but I just can’t bring myself to purchase anything made of astrakhan – I already feel guilty being a consumer of leather. Did they have a version without the astrakhan? I know Karl Lagerfeld is now using faux fur that looks amazing. Hopefully others will follow.
