Jason Wu Spring 2011

Well-crafted and polished continue to live on at the House of Wu. In the 27-year-old’s superb show of restraint, he managed to go beyond showing just some pretty clothes; his technique continues to come alive with each passing season. For spring, there was the perfectly tailored sportswear, done with a feminine twist, that has become his hallmark. Inspired by the work of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (think bold hues of color) as well as the artists and fashion illustrator Rene Gruau, Wu’s maturity beyond his tender years was evident–be it in the swagger of a great pair of wide leg trousers or his modern blouses that gives new meaning to being a Stepford Wife. As recognized as Wu is for his chic eveningwear, his separates are quickly gaining equal recognition. Indeed, signature cuts like jabot collars and organza/tulle tops have become mainstays–speaking of which, sees the introduction of a new owl icon named “Miss Wu” applied to a new collection of shoes and bags (and will also be featured on clothing and sunglasses). As for the evening lineup? Last season’s print frenzy of pouf skirts was replaced by body-skimming sheath dresses that exercised restraint. This is a Wu show, however, so naturally dresses festooned with petal embroideries had to make a cameo.
