For a designer whose works in wedding couture speaks bounds, Vera Wang continues to gain ground in the competitive ready-to-wear market. For spring she channeled a “Kill Bill” theme of East meets West that seems apropos given her ethnic background and her athletic roots. Celebrating her 20th anniversary this year, the sartorial references to her motherland was toughened up and made all that more sexy. While past seasons have verged on toothaches–thanks to their overly sweet nature–spring is a dark glamour. As models emerged from a forest backdrop (a blown-up photograph by Yoshihiko Ueda), a sea of black, eggplant and forest green with a pop of pink or crimson filed out, often in memorable fabric combinations. The sculpted sheaths were simply magnificent, as were the floral motifs.
